Too Many Sites on One Server?

I have a website that lost it's rankings recently. Google Webmaster Tools alerts that some of my pages have high response time. My site's speed gets score 90 at https://developers.google.com/pagespeed/.

So I checked my website at Whois Lookup & Domain Availability Search | DomainTools and it turns out that I am sharing hosting on server with 7,499 other sites! Do you think it's to many? Can it be the reason?

P.S. My hosting provider is GoDaddy.

It's possible. If this is a concern you can always move to your own server or talk to your host to see if they have another option for you.

    Hello James,
Sincerely, sometimes what your neighbors do may affect your search engine ranking...if the IP you are hosted on is blacklisted by the search engine then you can be sure that either you are innocent or not, your websites will suffer.

It's therefore recommended that you go for a dedicated IP hosting or at least shared seo hosting where you can control what happens in respect to your IP allocation...

You may ask me if you need more help.

Tim is correct here, alot of people do not understand that if your in a bad neighborhood you'll get slammed in rankings. It sucks but its a part of doing SEO, always take a look at the ip's your given, do a reverse lookup for all the sites on those ip's ( if they are shared ip's) and then look at the sites on those ip's. If the sites look like crappy or spammy sites most likely the rep will bleed to what you put on those ip's.

I checked my site that hosted on hostgator and it comes up with 246 other sites. I dont know though, I agree that you should contact your hosting customer service anytime if you have a doubt.

It might not be anything to do with GD, it could be your site, are you using lots of large images, are you using flash and javascripts, have you got a lot of plug-ins installed, are you using w3 super cache, and if you are have you configured it properly?

These things can all slow your site down, and G does't like slow loading as you probably know.

Is there any other reason your site may have dropped?

Thank you Tim. I've looked through blacklisted DNS databases and my IP doesn't appear anywhere on the list. My site still ranks number 1 for unique title terms, so it's not banned, I think. I was reading about SEO hosting and VPS lately. And I think I will switch next week or so.

I called GoDaddy, and their response was that they reserve the right to host as many sites on one server as they wish. But, the guy I was speaking to was pretty much clueless. When, I asked him about optimizing nameservers for better response time, I felt that I know more about hosting, than he does.

Loading size is @300kb. I think it's pretty good. I was thinking maybe some backlinks caused it, but I don't anymore. Maybe it's just a Google dance. Future will show. Fact is I am learning a lot right now.

Haha - why am I not surprised it's GoDaddy?

Seriously, GoDaddy is good for domains, but not for hosting. Never heard anything good regarding web hosting and GoDaddy.

Switch to Host Gator, maybe even go for a VPS or Reseller account if you can afford it. This wil definitely increase your speed. Also if your website is really big, you might want to look into Content Delivery Networks (CDN).

Yes , that is far too many sites on 1 server! 1 bad site and it messes up all the resources.

    Update:
I've researched sites on my server. Using 'IP' operator in Bing, and other sites rank pretty well for their terms, so IP doesn't seem to be penalized. I also ran IP itself through blacklists and it's clean. Server response time, however, is not stable and varies a lot, that's were overloaded server shows. Still not sure about the reason why my website dropped. But, today while looking at Webmasters Tools I noticed that CSS tags and operators show as keywords. Pretty weird..
