Monetizing a truly useful Cancer information site ETHICALLY?? Suggestions appreciated!

Hi guys,

I have an authority site with dozens of extremely well-researched, objective articles about cancer.

I have NO agenda on this site but to inform people with the FACTS and the science; all the information is totally impartial!

So I'm curious if there's anyway that I can monetize my traffic without compromising my terms.

I will NOT, for instance, put up ads that advertise a supplement such as essiac tea, for which there is no scientific support of any positive benefits, whatsoever.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on somehow monetizing this site ethically.

Regards,
Vic

Cancer can be a difficult topic to comment on. If I were running such a site I would make certain that I did not endorse any kind of treatment protocol (unless I was a doctor, which I am not). You might be able to find some good books at Amazon written by doctors or cancer survivors. I would use the Amazon affiliate widget to display them, although I probably would not encourage anyone to actually buy them. Just allow them to click thru and make up their own mind. Just my 2 cents

      Good call, Paulie.

While I wrote that the articles are objective, the opening article on the main page DOES have an angle regarding what's REALLY a healthy diet (paleo, in my opinion from research and much personal experimentation/tracking), so perhaps I can get people interested in that and promote some paleo cookbooks or something.

You can argue that changing your diet is the most fundamental of all treatment protocols! Oh well, I feel vindicated informing people about how sugar feeds cancer cells, etc.

THAT is something I refuse to tip toe around! ;-)

Self motivation and uppity type reading material, audios or videos are all something.

No treatment involved yet you still help them. One of the major issues with cancer (or people around them) patients is having that "moral" and "positiveness" without getting all depressed.

Amazon books is a good way to monetize it. Either your own books (if you do this kind of stuff) or other people's books, using aff links.

Oooor... Adsense is always an alternative.

Hi Vic, the first thought that sprung to my mind when I read your post was, offer an ebook to people, for ... well whatever you think would be suitable and then give away 50% of the profit from sales to a Cancer charity or organization.

Obviously you would make this very plain to would-be buyers, and you could perhaps have a counter showing how much your site has donated so far.

    hope that helps

That's a great idea, Tim! The counter would be great social proof and I may even make it 100% for charity. :-)

Try posting ads for hobbies one can do at home like crafts. Just a thought, but they say if you have something to do to keep your mind of it (like a fun craft) then your attitude improves and you feel better.

Or books about the healing benefits of having a pet?

I have a very close friend who has a breast cancer site also for informational purposes. He asks for donations for a cancer treatment facility and makes no profit personally.

However, he commissioned me to write, record and mix nature sounds guided imagery audio that he offers as free downloads for relaxing, as well as stress and pain relief. He told me that those are extremely popular on his site, so perhaps you may want to check into items that help the cancer patient in other problem areas they have to deal with that accompany having cancer, to promote.

      Hopes this helps.

Cancer is a multi-billion dollar industry, so the ethics of monetizing is purely a personal one. If you're offering value and not selling snake oil, there is nothing wrong with offering/suggesting products your visitors may be interested in. People with cancer are still people and there is no need to put on kid gloves and tip toe.

There is a big difference between offering useful information and pretending that you have a cure. If you can help someone have a better life, then you should.

I'm sure you know where to draw the line.

Have a look at Ask Questions, Get Answers from Experts ASAP | JustAnswer - it has an affiliate program. Basically it is a site that allows people to ask questions of an expert for a fee, and you get a cut of the fee. I just had a look and there is the option for someone to ask a question of an oncologist. Might be a good service for people when they need a quick answer to a general question and their doctor isn't available.

  • How disappointing to learn you are one of those people who mistakenly believes cancer can be treated with diet.
