Hang in there; it's worth your while

I got interested in Internet marketing about 2 years ago and had high hopes. I dreamt of earning bucket loads, buying fancy cars and having huge parties. This mind set had me buying product after product looking for that one product that will make all my dreams come true. Well, that never happened. After a year of buying products and just dreaming of spending more and more money - I stopped. I canned my internet dream and went on with my live. However the internet bug did not leave me, 3 months after my initial departure I returned to the world of internet marketing, making more progress, than I ever did in that year of buying products and hoping for the magic product to appear. To all those guys lacking motivation and feeling helpless, I hope this will get you back on track.

The first and most important mind shift I had to make was to realise that I was building a business, not just working for some one. It took me a while to realise this, but once I started running my internet marketing as a business, everything changed. The following steps helped me coin that concept:
  • Register a domain with your company name, a domain is just as good as registering a real business.
  • Setup email accounts for your new business. I started of with a personal email, a support email and a resources email.
  • If you have to work in the evenings, tell people you are working at your company, make it sound formal, DO NOT DOWN PLAY YOUR OWN COMPANY.
  • Once you have established your company's presents, establish a budget for your company. Doing this will not only help regulate you expenses but it will add substance to you companies presence.
  • Choose you poison and stick to it. I made use of my R&D division, nothing more than a folder, to emphasise my business model development phase. This is important, not knowing what you are doing on the internet is costly, you need an action plan and you need to see it through.

The only way you learn, as with any business, is to fail, get up and do it again. So, get online and see how epically you can fail, go all out and be the biggest failure (ideas not delivering results) out there, for you will learn more than the guys reading all the guides and playing it safe.

To your success,

This is something you can do within a few years. That may seem like a long time, but if you never have to work for someone every again, its worth every minute getting there.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

This is all good, but not what I am about at all. I hated the corporate world, thats why I quit my job over a year ago and went full time with IM. I don't want to put a persona out there that I some big important "company." I am not going to go around talking about "My Company" or all my different "departments" so that someone thinks I'm important. If I eventually grow to the point where I need those things, then so be it.

I'm completely honest and upfront with people and if they don't like it, well it won't hurt my success at all. So this is me telling you exactly what I am.

I take my business seriously, and I work harder than I ever have before. But at the end of the day I'm just a dude, working from home, making money on the internet.

  • Great post! People just don't seem to realize that you need to build a business. If they were doing it offline, they wouldn't look for freebies, or jump around from one method to another. They would focus on a business model and stick with it. Building an online business is no different. It takes some investment (smart investment), focus and dedication.

    Mooi man

Agreed. I experienced the same dreams and aspirations about IM. But I DID NOT buy into any products because I've always been very protective of my investments.

This made my learning curve longer though, because I've spent 6 years (last years of HS and all through college) learning the business and marketing variables that you need to succeed online. I've also learned that the principles apply in any business, not just online.

Strange, for all that I've gone through, I'm just starting to turn a profit. And I'm finally releasing my own product this year.

Been a crazy ride so far, but as you perfectly put it, you must fail fast and keep going. People rarely succeed by playing it safe, and failure is only failure when you die or give up.
