Option to Buy Product During Launch Process

Hello all,

What I've learned from watching and reading about product launches is that in most cases, you send free content to your list maybe 3 times or so, and after you give them the free content and build up anticipation, the product officially "launches" and finally becomes available for purchase.

What seems counterintuitive to me is why we have to withhold the ability to make a purchase until the end of the sequence of free content giveaways. What if someone is ready to buy after the first promotional free content email? Isn't it possible that some people may be interested in buying right away but then lose interest by the time the launch process ends?

My question is, in your experience/opinion, does withholding the ability to purchase during the launch period lead to more sales?

Thanks!

Doron

Anticipation is a powerful selling device.

Why do people queue overnight to get the latest goodies from Apple?

OK, yeah, I can definitely see how anticipation can be a powerful thing. There must be a reason that just about all product launches utilize it to maximize sales. I just didn't realize that the anticipation was more powerful than the ability to buy right away.

    Thanks guys!

When we were transitioning from the free version to the paid version of phpLD, we actually had people telling us they wanted to buy it before we had it ready. In this case, we already had a familiar product that people liked, so it was easy to pre-sell because we had already gained their trust. I think this would be the case with most pre-sells. It will work best if you have already developed a good relationship with many of the prospects.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

    Hello dvduval,

I actually have a good relationship with my list, as I've been sending them free content for over a year without selling anything and getting good feedback.

So are you saying in my case it would be good to offer the option to buy right away, or do you agree with the others that the anticipation factor justifies holding off on making the product available for sale right away?

    Thanks!

Be aware that you don't want to sell the item until the official launch, because PayPal will not tolerate you selling a digital product that is not delivered immediately after purchase.

And then you get a lot of stories about how bad PayPal is, freezing accounts for "no reason"

@tpw Well, I would be handling payments through ejunkie and the download would still be instantaneous, so I didn't even know it was possible to delay the download. But that's definitely good to keep in mind. Thanks!
