A technical question for the Warriors

Hey Warriors,

I'm in the process of re-branding my entire company, and I want to take all of the content I currently have on one site and transfer it to another URL. I'm not quite sure how to go about doing this, if you have any experience with something like this please do lead me in the right direction!

Thanks in advance to anybody who takes the time to help!

Paul

  • I had done this before but done it the hard way I copied all the content and re-published it on my new site.

If you find a faster way left me know in case I ever do it again or if I know someone who will do it.

Well you must have a bckup of your website and database if any.....To do this install filezilla and connect your host via FTP.... Then download all the files in Public_html or httpdocs directory to folder on your P.C....

If you have database driven website then goto phpmyadmin, select your database, click export... Select all tables and give it a name and click on Go...

It will download to your directed folder in few minutes depending upon the size.....

Not an expert here, but a couple things that'll probably help us help you:

    What CMS are you using?
Are you wanting to maintain an identical permalink structure?

If it's a WordPress site pick up a backup utility like Backup Creator (not an affiliate link). I have used it to move a site (albeit a small one) with no trouble whatsoever.

It will make this sort of thing a breeze. Whatever you do, make sure you have a good backup before you start.

Sweet, ya the site I'm moving is relatively new so I'd probably fit into that category. Great advice thanks Danny!

Why purchase a program to back it up for you when you can just as easily do it in under five minutes?

... if you are using Wordpress on a hosting provider with cPanel, all you need to do is go into phpmyadmin and export the SQL database that contains your Wordpress files ... and then simply import them (again, with phpmyadmin) on your new URL/domain/hosting.

Afterwards, access your wp-config.php file and input your new database information and everything should be a 'go.'

If you are referring to copy and paste, it's not that simple :p

The guy talking about FTP. He knows his stuff, I did that before and it worked.

Make sure you use a 301 redirect so google knows that you should have the google love passed from your old site to your new one.

I haven't had to do this before so I'm no expert but you should definitely look into it.

I am also dealing with the same thing for one of my sites and I decided that for now I'm just going to redirect a new domain name and mask it to the original site. This is the lazy creative way of doing it.

The drawback is that with masking, each page of my site just shows the overall masked domain name on the url.

Get a product called Filezilla. Transport your website content onto your hard drive. Then login to Filezilla with your new website, and upload the content onto the new site. This is the fastest way. Hope you understand it.
