How to edit MOV video files?

Hey guys,
I am a PC user, have a Kodak Zi8, and need to edit these video output files that are .MOV (no other format availlable).

I just do basic edits, and would even love to do it in Camtasia, but my version is older and doesn't work with .MOV. The ArcSoft package that comes with the camera will convert to AVI, but it screws the sound file up, and it comes out really tinny sounding.

What FREE program can I use to edit the .MOV files? Or is there an easy way to convert to AVI? I tried a couple converters, but the encoding still did not allow for Camtasia to edit..... ARGH!

Thanks team!
Jeremy

There are a number of ways to do this, you can use FFMPEG, to convert the file, or you can use a direct editor, MOV is actually not a bad format if you have settings that create the best compression and quality.

I use MAC, so everything is MOV, but I can check around to see what might be out there to do it for free, I am sure you can use FFMPEG, but to be honest, the file sizes will inflate if you try to use the older version of Camtasia, also, the code it outputs is often bloated, like road kill, in the middle of july.

I think you might do better with an editor that gives you more control over the output,

FFMPEG is my personal choice, but hitting keyboards for typing command lines is tiresome, also you need to tweak lots of parameters for the best results, which non-technical folks would be reluctant to do so. I use a wrapper of my favourite scripting language, so everything is automatic.

    Thanks Michelle and Tim,
I will keep searching for the elusive free MOV editor.... in the meantime, I will try the converters you have suggested....

Anyone else find a decent .MOV editor on the cheap (free)? I love the Zi8 (thanks to the external mic jack), but MOV is becoming a hassle....

Try VideoPad Video Editor - they have a free version, too.
Look carefully on the page for the link to the free edition.
I meant to copy the URL but as I had left the page they did not give the link again when I returned to it.

The software adds all sorts of media formats but outputs video only as avi.

Thanks for this ncmedia. I hear what you are saying about using Camtasia.... not really intended for live video. At this point, I just need to trim my video (camera is on a tripod, so I need to trim out my walking into the frame and out of the frame) and perhaps add a title slide - so not really editing so to speak.

I tried a free version of one of the programs you suggested last year - but for a non-video guy like me it was difficult to figure out.

    I continue on my quest....

    Have a gooder!

Get yourself either AdobePremiere, FinalCutPro, or other semi-pro/pro video editor you'll find it much easier to be in charge of the cut.

Having said that - best free conversion tool out there imo:
Squared 5 - MPEG Streamclip video converter for Windows XP/Vista/7

load your .mov, set whatever format you want for camtasia (mp4 with h.264 codec or flv work best for camtasia - AVI's are massive and cinepak sucks so if you do AVI's use the h.264 - set your quality/audio and convert - then load them up in your camtasia and you're good to go.

    Cheers,
    NC.

PS: MOV is actually amazing once you wrap your head around the codecs and conversions - Look up 4:4:4 and 4:2:2 conversions - that's what you want to preserve quality.

Actually, I always had trouble with my Kodak camera. It produced files in a format that was hard for video editors to read, so I got rid of it and got a cannon. That one works super. BTW, Kodak is going to stop making digital cameras.

I was using file conversions. However, you lose a lot of your detail and it makes for a fuzzy movie.

It's not well documented, but you have to install Apple's QuickTime software before Camtasia will work with MOV files. Until then, it looks like Camtasia doesn't support it.

Suggest you to convert MOV to AVI and still edit the videos with Camtasia. Or edit MOV files with Final Cut Pro, a editing program designed by Apple Inc. You can also try Video Editor software.

I add mine here. I use PAZERA video converter which I found to be highly effective. It is also 100 percent free. It converts to most media formats. After converting you can edit with the video editors that come with windows.

Another alternate to cut videos is Avidemux free software.

While this is an old thread that's been bumped, the info could be useful for other folks.

A key to being a good video creator is being able to convert videos from one format to another, which will give you the most options since not all video editors can handle all video formats.

I suggest the FreeMake video converter. It's free, easy and works with virtually all the popular video formats.

I use iDealshare VideoGo to edit MOV video.

    It helps to:

Remove any unneeded contents in MOV video including black borders, commercial logos, watermark, subtitles, audio track, etc.
Split, merge, trim, compress or rotate MOV 90 degrees, 180 degrees or 360 degrees.
Add special effects, subtitles, background music, text or photo to MOV movie.
Edit MOV as well as keep the same MOV video format or edit MOV as well as convert MOV to other video format like MP4, AVI, WMV etc
The most obvious feature: The above features will keep MOV video quality and at fast speed when editing MOV.
