WARNING: FB LIKES are NOT the same as FB SHARES

I've heard a lot of people telling me, lately, to LIKE something or other because it will go viral. I think they are mistaken. Unless a LIKE is your only option, a SHARE is a better marketing strategy for FB Profile pages.

A LIKE appears as a one liner on a wall with no image and it gets buried amongst the other videos and images on your wall.

A SHARE is about 10 times larger than a LIKE. It can include an image or video, a headline, a link and a description. A SHARE is more visually captivating and therefore its viral capabilities far exceed that of a LIKE.

Don't be fooled LIKES are NOT equivalent viral marketing techniques as SHARES. Sure LIKES have their purpose but they do not have the same viral effect as a SHARE when used on a profile page.

Good point! Likes will fill up your news feed with all their posts as well.

True, though if you have a Facebook Page, likes can be useful as well. When someone likes your page, they will see everything you post to your page's wall. I believe there's also a rule that you can have a custom URL when you reach a certain number of likes -it's not very high, 25 I think.

But for ordinary posts, likes are pretty meaningless. Shares can indeed be better, as they can cause your post to go viral or at least reach more people.

The question is kind of a moot point...the share button has been deprecated (no longer supported) by Facebook. You can read about it here: Facebook Share - Facebook Developers

They're now "encouraging" people to use the like button more. No worries though, they have improved the like button to function more like the share button, so it's all good.

Great point Christine.. I actually have a strategy where i use sharing.. Likes are cool for blog posts but if you really want something to go viral, you have to get it shared..

I make people share my fanpage.. When they like it, they get a chance to get my ebook on my fanpage.. only way tho is to share the fanpage.. might be an old trick but I'm loving it..

Which like button plugin do you use? I use the shareit plugin, and when I click the like button, a window pops up and and allows me to make a comment. It then shows up on my wall just like the share button did...with my comment, a thumbnail, an excerpt, and a link.

I'd be interested in reading your answer to this out too as I am in the process of completely revamping my FB marketing also.

          Cheers

Not currently using a like or share button. Just tired of people telling me that the like is viral. Just look at any FB profile page, click on the like and see what you get. Now click on the share and see what happens.

It's not right. I don't like it when people try to tell me that the standard like button is as good as a share for viral purposes.

            ..just saying.

Which like button are we talking about here? The fan page like button or the like button that can be put on each post on your blog?

If we're talking about the fan page like button then you're right, there is no viral component. But the like button that you put on your individual posts does have a viral component. When someone "likes" your post, a link will show up on their wall for all of their friends to see. I would call that viral.

It seems that we are talking about 2 different things here.

Ok, I have to ask the dumb question. What is a share? I see the like button, but no share button. How do I share?

    I wasn't fooled. But you're right.

It's all about shares. Likes are not very effective and are a dime a dozen.

When Marketing on Facebook (using the "Share" method), how do you decide WHERE to share your page? Did you come up with a list of open groups that let you post and share your information?
