Why doesn't anyone know the answer to this question?

So I have hostgator, and I have 5 domains.

1 of those 5 domains is the main domain. The others are "add-on" domains.

The add-on domains are all linked to this domain....

maindomain.com/add-ondomain1.com
maindomain.com/add-ondomain2.com
maindomain.com/add-ondomain3.com
maindomain.com/add-ondomain4.com

As a result of this, a google search for the "main domain" will bring hits showing my add-on domains...ruining my privacy.

How do I make it so that all my domains are completely separate and won't link to one another?

If that is your internal directory structure then it looks like it's fine.

Are you saying Google has indexed it as a sub-directory?

If I type "maindomain.com" into google or "add-ondomain.com" into google some of the hits will show that they are linked.

That is, some of the hits will be maindomain.com/add-ondomain.com.

    Hi,

Your other domains are all 'subdomains' of the main domain.

Unless I'm missing something, of course Google will treat them as a single domain.

Because linked or not, they *all* share the same domain name.

You ought to split them into different www addresses, e.g.

    maindomain.com
    anotherdomain.com
    yetanotherdomain.com

      How does one do this?

In the hostgator control panal, I went to add-on domain. I typed in my new domain, and automatically some of the boxes filled in and made the domains linked.

You'll need to purchase new domain names.

Only then will they be separate entities.

At the moment you have ONE domain name with different subdomains.

I bought 5 domains from godaddy.

I'm attempting to host all of them under one hosting account (I think it's the "baby plan" ) at hostgator.

I just don't want them to be linked.

            That's fine.

Each domain need to have its own DNS entry...which basically means you need to give each of them a 'nameserver' address (wherever you bought them, e.g. GoDaddy)

Then you need to set them up as separate domains in your hosting account.

Problem with your DNS then. Looks like your domain isn't pointing correctly.

Pointing is done in your control panel. If you can't find it send a support ticket as they will "point" you in the right direction.

Did you do that with your domain registrar? That is where you would point your DNS, not necessarily hostgator.

I bet that's it. Never set the nameserver at the domain registrar. So when you add the add-on domain, google never see's the actual domain.

I would get a hold of godaddy then. There may be a problem with the domain name pointing the right place.

Hostgator can't fix that - only godaddy can.

I read somewhere on here (i apologize that i don't have a link), that the only way to have separate domains with hostgator is to have a "reseller" account($25/ month i think).

That will give you Individual www.domain1.com, www.domain2.com etc. Without linking them to each other.

I encountered this problem as well when finally taking some action and getting domains registered and setting them up yesterday.

If you find a solution please let us know!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this question as I'm facing the same problem and not too sure how to ask for help.

You were faced with the hostgator chat three times??? Feel sorry for you and hope you had plenty of aspirin for that headache.

If no solution and/or easy fix, my solution will be to continue to hold my business hostgator account as well as purchase an addition hatchling plan for that one domain I wish to have completely separate. Sad, huh?

Guys, I have a shared (and a VPS) with hostgator for 5 years and I have never had that problem.

It sounds like something is not set up right with the domain name. Going to the registrar (in this case, godaddy) is your best option for resolution.

Yeah Rob but she is using a single shared hosting account like baby gator and simply doing add on domains. The only NS she will have is her main dot com NS

        AH. Yup! That'll do it.

She needs at least a business account I think. Otherwise they all show up as under one domain.

If I am not mistaken she is using one shared hosting account and just adding the domains to the main account .. this is different than sub-domains. As long as she is riding on this main account ... the URL will remain the same.

If you are going to run that many domains .. try reseller accounts. Add on domains are one of the biggest security threats for gaining access to your actual hosting account.

Situation normal. That's how addon domains work.

Now, to make them appear as separate sites and to achieve your desired outcome in the search results there a couple of things you can do.

    1. Go to Google webmaster tools and add each site with it's maindomain.com so Google knows to index them as separte sites.

    2. Start building links to your main domains, and never build links to maindomain.com/add-ondomain1.com or add-ondomain1.maindomain.com

It might take a few days for you to see the results.

Well they will always exist. Nothing you can do about that.

I gave you a solution but if you still don't like add-on domains then get a reseller account.

Add-on domains these are Troy, they do indeed reside in subdirectories within the internal structure, but if they are pointed correctly then they act as independently of each other.

I ran into the same problem a few years back with a baby account .. their support told me I would have to go for the Business or enterprise accounts at minimum to have multiple NS.

For the price of Enterprise .. it was just easier for me to go with a reseller with wham.

Does any company offer a cheap hosting plan where you can keep your domains totally separate?

That would be $2 each for your 5 sites .... if they did it would be an account with very low storage and bandwidth.

In the hostgator control panal, when I went to "add-on domains" and entered my new domain names it automatically created the add-on domain as a subdomain too.

In the "add-on domain" link, there is a box that says "subdomain" and it automatically fills in when you enter an add-on domain. It fills in the sub-domain box with something like maindomain.com/addondomain.com

Yeah ... the auto install does that .. it is actually a lot easier to rank a sub-domain as compared to an add on also. Google takes the first word in a string and somewhat ignores the suffixes ....

So articlemarketing.mysite. com will rank easier than mysite. com/articlemarketing

Never have add-on domains (one of the biggest mistake marketers make). Get a reseller accounts, vps, or dedicated server and you can keep all accounts apart from one another.

The business plan is 11.96 a month if you pay monthly...I currently pay 14.99 for the business plan and it's worth it. (Also have a VPS for 50 a month)

It's $1.96 over your 10 dollar budget and you won't have any of these problems.

Don't go cheap on, what is effectively, your storefront.

You don't have to pay money, here is a solution:

Go to your main domains .htaccess file (located in root folder of site) and add:

    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(www.)?your_main_domain.com$ [NC]
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/add-on_domain.COM_folder/(.*)$
    RewriteRule ^(.*)$ - [L,R=404]

    For multiple domains:

    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(www.)?YOUR_MAIN_DOMAIN.com$ [NC]
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/ADDON_DOMAIN_1/(.*)$ [OR]
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/ADDON_DOMAIN_2/(.*)$ [OR]
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/ADDON_DOMAIN_3/(.*)$
    RewriteRule ^(.*)$ - [L,R=404]

This will through a 404 error everytime someone tries to enteter your addon domain through main domain.

But an htaccess file can *only* influence its root domain.

It can't fool Google into thinking a subdomain is a completely different domain.

You keep your add-on domains and I will keep my dedicated server, wonder which one ranks better

Paying money for business is what people need to understand. Many people seem to be under the "free" impression that a business cost $0 to run. It is true that you can build a online business cheaper than offline but the fact is it still cost money.

Taking shortcuts is not always the best course of action.

It doesn't mean u have to pay 200$ for a dedicated server just to host a website that has 2 visitors a day.

Your own server or a shared hosting doesn't matter. (as long as your site speed is good, and there are not many spamming sites on the same IP)

The method that i posted is a working solution, I used it myself. (I used to have addondomain.maindomain.com appear in search results when I search for "addondomain", then i used this method, and after a while it disappeared)

Google does not see the domain.com/domain because you give away a 404. (or you can make a 301 redirect)

I want to try this out.

Is this what I do (?)...

I went to file manager --> (web root or document root?) ---> .htaccess -->Save as---> open in notepad--->delete everything inside---> copy/paste what you wrote and replace with my domain names-->replace old .htaccess with new .htaccess

Note: web root and document root both have .htaccess and it is exactly the same file size. So do I do this procedure twice, once for each of web root and document room?

I have dedicated because I have well over 300+ websites that all get traffic. Dedicated makes more of a difference than what you think, many huge benefits and speed is one of those benefits.

My opinion (and I been here for longer than most) add-on domains are the dumbest things you could use for your business. So much easier to maintain and run websites that are not all slapped under the same cpanel, same ftp, same phpmyadmin.

Not to mention Google will soon release a tweak to their search about add-on domains and sub-domains (that is what is in the grapevine, we will see how that pans out).

I have the babyplan. I have my main domain and 1 other addon domain. I have not had this problem. Did you watch the video on how to set up an addon domain in cpanel?

What a lot of confusion and misunderstanding in this thread.

Simply put, any shared hosting plan with cpanel access will create a sub-domain of your primary domain name when you add a addon domain.

That's just the way they work. If you want true separation, get a reseller, VPS or dedicated server.

Now, to the main question which was related to whether Google knows or indexes these sub-domains, the answer is it depends.

Certainly if you have a link to one of the sub-domains, it will be indexed.

Suggest you read through this HG post regardsing addon domains:

Its the same site, when google crawles your site, it will crawl all you sub domains and index them to. Just get other domains. 1 Website is just 1 website
