Has Anyone Created Something Viral By Giving Out Expensive Prizes?

Has anyone here ever had something go viral by giving out prizes like this? I have never tried it so I'm definitely curious.

I think it would be interesting to try this with some really out there prices. Like a iPad with a signature from Madonna or Metallica drummer. I still believe you would get better results if you are able to narrow down the audience even further. Go for a specific demographic and offer them something that will knock their socks off!

Thanks for the input. I am still trying to decide whether to go with lots of cool prizes in the $100-$500 range or a handful of $2,000+ prizes. I may have to test it.

Are you perhaps missing the whole concept of 'viral' - Keyboard Cat is viral. Funny or Die creates viral stuff. Viral is this: 2011

Viral is when people share it with other people. You need create something that is humorous, userful, etc.

I don't believe it's about cost, It's about creativity, the bold, different, the craziest of things are what goes viral.
If it's odd, people will love it,if its really funny they will love it. They want to be entertained not educated.

    • Internet contesting is pretty much settled now. There are dozens of websites that have contest listings and there are people who do nothing but enter contests all day long (probably when they're supposed to be working). I'm running a contest right now on my blog with prizes worth $300 and I haven't even gotten 200 entries yet. It doesn't look like it will be a great ROI.

So if you want traffic and don't care that it's untargeted, you would have to spend a lot of money on prizes, and that makes it unaffordable for most entrepreneurs.

What has a slim chance of going viral is some kind of wacky stunt.
