Is it worth buying traffic just for list building?

I was watching a Frank Kern video a while ago and he says that he buys traffic to his squeeze page at 10 cents a click, and gets a 20% opt in rate, meaning he pays 50 cents per subscriber.

Does anyone else here do this?

I think I could afford to do this strategy on its own, but I've been reading up about autoresponders, and apparently Aweber starts to get kind of expensive when you get to a higher number of subscribers. I'm not sure I could afford both costs at this earnly stage in my career, especially since I still haven't got my first product out yet.

I've tried buying traffic in the past and it was always super low quality. Wasn't worth it (in my opinion).

There are many affordable options to aweber.
Also, if you can find a cheap targeted traffic source,
then by all means, GO FOR IT!

Not in proportion to the monthly income you can earn from a well-built, targeted list, it doesn't. Aweber costs are the tiniest drop in the ocean.

    They're two totally different things.

One is just one form of attracting traffic. There are countless other alternatives. PPC, in particular, typically has a long (and sometimes expensive) learning-curve.

An autoresponder (and not a free one!), on the other hand, is an absolute essential, for any form of affiliate/vendor marketing. Trying to do without one is shooting yourself in the foot before you start. Aweber charges $1 for the first month and then $19 per month. That gives you two months to earn $20. Without earning $20 in two months, it isn't a business at all.

I haven't got my first product out yet, either. You don't have to have your own products (or even intend to have them) to earn a living as an internet marketer.

I have noticed that in some markets well-known brands are taking over certain keywords, so I started investigating. They are apparently paying crazy amounts, because they have shifted their marketing budgets. Funding that was previously used to brand the company are now used for PPC advertising. They look at the revenue they can make not just within a month, but in the LIFETIME of the customer. With this in mind, I think you should be able to finance the cost of a auto responder service

Don't forget Frank was doing this back when you could actually buy good quality traffic for this low price. Not that you can't find it today, but you would be hard pressed to find really high quality traffic to build a massive list at only $0.10 per click, over and over again.

I don't use PPC, I hear though that strong keywords in the IM niche costs several dollars per click, and even upwards of $10+ for high-volume keys.

Not to mention that he could have 'bulk arrangements' with his advertisers, and that he's just plain good at what he does.

But in many niches, as far as I know, .10 per click isn't at all unreasonable, especially outside of Adwords. Although I'm certainly no well-traveled PPC guru.

At this early stage in your career, however, there is absolutely no reason for you to feel like paid traffic is the only way to get traffic. That is certainly untrue, and I would also recommend that the list takes priority over the paid traffic.

In fact, it wouldn't be a bad idea at all to start building a list, make sure it actually converts leads into sales, and THEN start worrying about paid traffic. PPC takes more than just money to be profitable.
