I'm developing some webmaster related WordPress sites and I'm looking for some simple web 2.0 and visually attractive free WordPress themes, any suggestions?

Typing "best free wordpress themes" into a search engine is one way to go about it. A lot of online magazines put together big lists of what they consider the best free WordPress themes, like this one.

Free WordPress Themes: 2011 Edition | Smashing WordPress

You'll often find quite a few gems on these lists.

I have wasted many an hour looking for themes. Regardless here are some tips...

google your website terms such as green website three columns - look at the IMAGES instead of the text..you can quickly scan and then go in and focus on what interests you.

Also flexibility 3 is an amazing freebie wordpress theme.

Try out Flexibility 3. It looks good, decent and very easy to customize. It's also free. If you check out the site on my signature link, that site uses flexibility 3 theme.

I just get confused many a time. In many of the training I learn that you do not need so many WP themes, just a few of them would be great. Then what do I do with hundreds of themes?

Nothing. Delete them! You need only ONE theme that fits your blog.

P.S. for everybody in this thread: themes are over-rated - they are the least important part of your blog... Just saying.

I think you should try out Themeforest website; it has got wide ranges of WordPress themes and that too for each and every kind of projects. I am sure you will get a promising one there. Although, searching on Google for the same is another good option which you can try out to get some more relevant results. A place called yoctotemplates.com also provides such kind of themes; you can refer to them as well.

You can search for beautiful free themes on the WordPress website itself. Visit : https://wordpress.org/themes/, you will come across a wide range of themes that you can use for your website or blog.

That's a good suggestion, but the problem with the official WordPress.org Themes repository is that it is hard to weed out the old style looking blogs. There are plenty of gems in there, but unless you sort them by popularity, (which will give you a design that everyone else has) they are hard to find.

I'd suggest searching Google by your niche type or by the design style you're looking for, ie "Free Responsive Simple WordPress Theme" or "Free Flat Design WordPress Theme".

You can also use the curated lists of WordPress themes at popular web design blogs. Here's three of the lists we pull from for our clients:

Those 3 lists should be enough to get anyone started.

Do you have customization in mind? Forget free themes then. If you are building a business let it sit on a building you own and not in your community park!

Good themes don't cost a bomb. There are some free themes that are good, but the time required to customize them and get rid of the annoying footers and favicons....it just drives me mad.

    Just my $0.02.

Why don't invest only one time in a service that gives you access to all their themes for a large period of time? I am thinking to solutions like Elegant Themes for example.
They gives you access to many themes for a yearly fee. There are many out there doing the same.
