Can You Fake PR?

Just wondering. A few days ago I seen a site on another forum (golf forum) and they said they were selling it. Me being me, being interested in golf, saw this as an opportunity.

Anyways, got beaten to the punch but just after checking I found out the site was only registered a few months back and they were claiming PR4. I checked it at the time and it was indeed PR4, well according to a random checker anyway.

Just wondering if this is likely? Or can it be faked? A PR4 after only a few months? It just looked like a blog. No advertising. No comment and all articles on since January 2012. He only got a couple of hundred dollars for it too. I would have thought, had they sold it through Flippa, it would have got a lot more.

Any ideas?

PR4 in a few months is achievable. within 3 months of SEO I got my sites to PR3 so I think it is achievable you just have to work hard at it.

PR can easily be faked by the 301 redirect trick

You 301 redirect a site with PR to the site you wish to fake the PR on. This then transfers the PR across to the site you are faking it on.

This is where a lot of people get caught out when buying domains from godaddy auctions and the like with PR as they are redirected. After they are purchased the redirect is removed and the PR drops back down.

To check this google site:yourdomain.com and if your domain comes up it does not have a redirect but if another site comes up then it is likely fake PR.

I checked all the stats and the backlinks are near enough through a checker, the site: check does reveal the correct site, however on copyscaping the content some of it is copied from a different site with another PR4 site. Its not linked in anyway with the original.

Pagerank can be faked by doing a 301 redirect to a site with high pagerank and then removing the redirect just before you sell it. If I redirect all my sites to Google, for instance, all of my sites will show a pagerank of 10. Checking the cached version will often show the high pagerank site that the site was redirected to.
