Sub-domains, Linking, and PR

This is something I don't think I've ever been totally clear on. If I had a sub-domain, say:

sub.mydomain.com

And I sent my linking to that URL, will backlinking and PR spillover to the top level domain?

www .mydomain.com

It's not easy to change a ton of links once these linking campaigns get going, so before I pull the trigger, I'd like to know what the consensus is here

EDIT: I'm also asking if linking to the sub-domain will give any benefit to the top level domain. If It doesn't, then I'm better off making this affiliate URL(what this will be) a part of the Home domain in stead of a sub-domain.

No benefit will pass to your main domain unless there's a link on the sub domain to the main domain so that both spider activity, PR and user attention can flow.

    Hope that helps.

Subdomain is always considered as seperate part of a web site. Backlinks to subdomain are not passed on to main domain. That is horrible part of subdomains.

Right.. Only if you link to the top level will pagerank be transfered.
