Separate email list for product launch

Hello there,

When it comes time to do a product launch, I've noticed that many marketers set up a separate email list just for the launch. Of course, they invite everyone in their master list to join the launch-specific list, usually in exchange for a free piece of content. But it seems to me that unless members of their master list sign up for the launch list, the master list will no longer hear anything about the launch.

Is that actually the case?

I'm doing a product launch w/free content giveaways, but I'm afraid that if I only promote my launch and free giveaways to people who sign up to my launch list, I'd be cutting out a massive chunk of potential buyers. Also, since I'm going to be sending them free content to promote the launch, it seems like the additional emails would be welcomed, and not seen as spam.

Do you think I can simply use my entire master list for the product launch, or should I only market the product to those who took the trouble to sign up for a launch-specific list?

Thanks!

Doron

The point you need to consider is, if people from your main list haven't signed up for the prelaunch then most likely they aren't that interested anyway so would be less likely to buy in the first place. At least those on the prelauch list are more targeted and in my opinion these are the people you should be focusing on.

If you find your not getting people onto the prelaunch list then it may have something to do with your positioning or incentive to sign up.

That's a good point. But what about people who might not be interested in the first free giveaway, but might be interested after the 2nd or 3rd free giveaway. I'm still not sure if I see an upside to excluding every person on my mailing list who doesn't sign up right away.

Is it because I may lose my credibility and be seen as a spammer even though I don't ask for the sale until after my 3rd free giveaway?

One of the reasons to do a prelaunch is to have a quick flood of customers purchase your product at launch time. This will give you great sales stats and will entice affiliates to promote your product.

I don't see any problem with continuing to offer your free products to your main list. Most people won't be offended by multiple offers of free products. Even if they don't sign up, they most likely won't be offended by it.

very interesting discussion and something i was contemplating myself

your points helped me come to a clear answer

send to your main "master list' as well

like you said, they may not respond to the first freebie to bribe them into the early bird funnel. to those that dont sign up, maybe you should do an exit popup that gives them the free video without having to optin and then asks them to optin to get updates on the rest of the series.

id mail out #2 to your main list and see how many more people you round up

hell, id even send #3. it doesnt hurt. its free content. thats what people are on your list for. i know gurus who promote their launch stuff to me even when i dont opt in for that particular launch. dont leave $ on the table. its free content thats part of a launch. no need to be afraid of sending out valuable content.

Hey guys, thanks so much for the insights - you've confirmed what I suspected. Maybe with marketers who have gigantic lists they can afford to market only to those who signed up for their launch list- but that said, I do seem to get a constant flood of emails from these folks and I'm sure that I'm being included in launches that I didn't specifically sign up for.
