I purchased a webiste on Flippa and it came with an email list of about 16,000 unique email addresses although I suspect at least 20% of them are invalid addresses. Although I have these email addresses, none of these people actually opted into anything; they just provided their email address to get some information.
My question is: What can I do with them? Can I legitimately add them to my aweber account and see if any of these people will opt into my mailing list for another related site? Is there any other way to use this list without spamming anyone?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    This is a tough one.

You can upload them into aweber but aweber will send them a confirmation email. If none of them remember who you are most likely none will open the email and click on it so the effort will be lost. What I would do if I chose this route is make a custom confirm subscription email witha catchy subject line and offering a gift in the body of the email. Depending on the quality of the list and their interest in the subject matter it might work well or not at all.

I once heard Frank Kern say that Constant Contact allows import of emails, but you have to call them and negotiate. I dont think its going to be cheap but then again I have never done that.

Another thing you can do is try smtp.com they will allow you to email from their service. Its not an auto responder but you can build a relationship with the list and then send them to a squeese page with aweber form on it.

Thanks, I will try that. All of the email providers are website owners or webmasters and the email list I would like them to sign up for is IM related so maybe they will sign up if I can get them to the squeeze page with the aweber form on it.

Did you first ensure that is list that is legitimately collected at the site- and not some bought 'from some dubious fella' list?

List is 100% legitimate (or at least it is the data entered by the website user). The actual emails are probably bogus in some cases (or at least they appear to be when you look at them) i.e. fgrgjoeksjhf@sdfrgklsjp.com

    Hi jd,

You can add them to your aweber if you like and they will choose whether they would like to opt-in. Just ask the previous owner if he can email them or validate your request somehow (maybe a banner update or article on your website), letting them know ahead of time. This will give them the option to opt-in to your list, and should keep you in the green zone.
