In-house Affiliate program vs. outside services

For someone just getting into being a merchant with an affiliate program is there any conventional wisdom as to which is the better choice? Is a software/WP Plugin solution better, or using an outside service that takes care of payments etc? Either way, could you suggest which ones to use or which ones to avoid?

    There is a good bunch of fully automated plugins that will sort affiliate payments automatically, you just have to set them up and provide eventual customer service.

    If you want to save the time and hassle then go for affiliate management service, but you will pay for it.

    It's a matter of choosing time vs money.
