How do you conceal WP site while you are building it?

Is there a way to build a WP site w/o showing it to the public while you are building it ---but still being able to continue to see it yourself?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, WordPress › Maintenance Mode « WordPress Plugins

You can customize the splash page with whatever you want if you wish.

      Great suggestions ----thank you!

I decided to take a domain that I will not be developing and will use it as my test site for development. Then once I have it built, I'll clone it with WP Twin and deploy on the actual domain. I'm thinking I might actually create subdomains off the test site as a way to store the original versions.

Well, have you tried setting up the whole thing in your local computer before uploading it? You can build a local server with tools like WAMP (for PC) or MAMP (for MAC) and mess around with your local version even if your "official" one is up and running.

That will also serve as backup copy for your files.

Is that what you were looking for?

No problemo guys, I use that plugin on almost every WP site if I'm not developing it locally (which sometimes I do, it just depends).

The best way is to build it on your machine and then deploy it to production (on the hosting) when you're done with it.

    That way:
    - you can test future modification without breaking the production site.
    - you always have a copy of the most recent code/files on your local machine.

Yes but when ppl starting putting comments on your blog and other changes are made - how do you keep them in sync with your local machine?

Just go into the Settings tab and then to the Privacy tab, and click the button to hide the site from the search engines. It won't keep anyone with the link to the site from going to it, but it will keep the site from being indexed by the search engines, so people won't be able to find it there.

Then, when you're ready, go back into the Privacy tab and click to make the site visible to the search engines. Just remember to hit the Update button to save your changes!

You don't need, it's data, not files. For that you just need to do a daily backup of your database.

So now let's say you have someone who hacks your site, your restore your files using your local copy and just restore your daily database backup.

I don´t tend to make mine private but I do like to block it from the search engines till I have set it up completely.
You can do this through the privacy options under settings.
    Hope this helps.
