Thanks

It used to stand for "Rich Site Summary" but now it stands for "Really Simple Syndication."

Syndication, in the web sense, is web site material that is made to be available to a bunch of different web sites. What they get is a summary of recent additions (content) to the original website and will give them a way to not only stay up to date with what you are doing but it provides a way and a reason to continually go to you for information.

For the user, it is incredibly convenient because they have those additions sent to them instead of having to go to a bunch of different sites to see if anything has been updated they tell you.

It is very powerful to syndicate your contents. Sending your RSS to RSS directories means additional traffic and backlinks to your site. It is mainly used for syndication of contents (distribution).

The most simple explenation I can five is this

Rss is a file that holds a summery of your content. It is in a special format that can be read by other programs and people can subscribe to it. So every time you make an update in your content it will be changed in that file and everyone that has indicated to be notified will be able to see it.

@raynman and Jenni - thanks for the mention for FreeRSSTips.com, appreciate that! I've neglected it for awhile *but* have several additional question/answers that I'm adding to it. I was fortunate enough to get some great feedback from here and the BF forum on what others would like to see added. So I'll be posting an updated version in the near future!
