Is WordPress kicking HTML butt?

When I started out with internet marketing I set out building HTML sites. I wrote code and templates and starting building dynamic sites as well. After a while I gave WordPress a try and I was impressed.

For me, if you are going to consider Internet marketing, WordPress is the default platform, do not bother building HTML sites, they take time and are very difficult to maintain. It is good to know a little HTML, but most of the code can be found by doing a simple Google search.

So, if you are starting out, boot HTML and start with one of the brilliant free themes that are available.

I think you mean "kicking butt" not "licking butt" LOL

The latter implies HTML is dominating while the former means WordPress is way ahead of the game now.

It makes no sense to say "don't use HTML, use Wordpress" since Wordpress is a CMS (sort-of) outputting HTML.

What you probably want to say is "Don't build your site in HTML starting from scratch, use Wordpress."

    Just to clarify.

And yes, HTML is dominating for content delivery over the internet.

I made my first websites with Netscape Composer. It was a free WYSIWYG add-on editor to then common browser Netscape Navigator. Then switched over to Dreamweaver--well, much better, yes. All the time, from the start, I didn't quite understand why some people preferred to hand-code their pages in Notepad :-) I could understand HTML, do some copy paste, insert scripts into the source and so on, but never ever would I make a nested table layout in Notepad as some did!

However, it is still very useful to understand what's in the code. The basic HTML tag structure, how links are "spelled" and so on. How would a person who hasn't got a clue, check if backlinks are nofollow or dofollow? How would he check if his site's meta tags are in place and display all of the correct information? How would he research his competitor's meta tags? You don't have to write HTML, but you surely have to read it.

Totally agree. no discussion. And besides just blogs all types of sites are easily build with wordpress. I tried to build a membership site with another software before I used a WP plugin. I dont know much about HTML, but learnt to build sites with WP with ease.

    I like wordpress.

    I like HTML.

yes, there is more that you can do with wordpress, with less knowledge.

But I still believe HTML has its benefits,
    Hence, I still use HTML.

I'm not sold on the idea of not learning any HTML. I think HTML is ideal for making a single-page website that doesn't have a lot to it, such as a squeeze page.

WordPress isn't all that great in my opinion. Personally, I find it downright confusing, but I have the best WP person in the world doing the installations and set-up for me. She rocks!

So, if I need to make a simple website, I will do it in HTML. If it's going to be a full website with all kinds of functionality, then I go to my WordPress pro. Once it's set up, I can do basic upkeep and add posts.

Both HTML and WP have their place, and not learning any HTML at all seems like a big mistake to me.

    All the best,
    Michael

learn some html, css, and php because it will come in useful, but yes, use those CMSs to make life easier. There was a time before dynamic content generation (php, mysql, etc) it sucked.

Pretty much what I think as well.

There have been times when knowing some HTML and PHP really saved my butt!

I think OP has a good point too.

Are there any products that teach just the practical amount of HTML, PHP, and CSS needed to use with WordPress?

CMS are doing much easer to make your website, especially if you are not a techy-gick.
But as my experience, every template in CMS requires some handwork to adopt it for your needs. That's where HTML knowledge popping up. I have basical HTML and CSS knowledge, but it helps me very often, despite I'm using out-of-the-box CMS (Joomla).

It's nonsensical to talk about using HTML or WordPress.

It's a bit like saying is it better to use words or a book.

      Exactly.

HTML is the way in which the language is rendered in the browser. Im no WP expert but isnt it written in PHP?

Any language, whether its .net, php or otherwise, once it hits your screen is HTML.

wordpress is way to insecure to base your whole buisness on, fine for personal blogs. But for anything substantial its a liability waiting to happen.

Its only virtue is the percieved notion its easy to set up
