Any other recommendations similar to Amazon?

Bummed... just went to sign up for the affiliate program with Amazon, but I can't since I live in North Carolina. I was hoping to open up the account but guess not.

That said, are there any suggestions for anything remotely close to Amazon? Or will I have to simply Clickbank and CJ it going forward? You could imagine my face... going in all smiling like "yes, I'm going to try Amazon as others say is good to attack" and then WHAM, Amazon says "NO YOU'RE NOT". Guess I could move to another state. Lol!

Any other alternatives that you recommend that may be similar to Amazon to some degree? Or aside from CB and CJ?

You could use the Skimlinks.com program. With that you can still be an affiliate of Amazon as you are using Skimlink's links.

I think you can use it through Squidoo.... Maybe Squidoo is the Amazon affiliate and then Squidoo pays you a cut?

I would try share-a-sale, Linkshare, and just trying to sign up directly with sites that will let you be an affilaite for them. Also, Google has an affiliate program. There are really very many affiliate site to sign up for.

I should know, I too live in North Carolina and I too was sooo disappointed about Amazon.

I have always wondered, why is Amazon not allowed in North Carolina (and in other states if so)

        Hello fellow North Carolinian!

I have just gone through the same process as you and I've just set up a Skimlinks account. It's easy to install (Wordpress plugin), and all you have to do is copy and paste the Amazon link and it automatically converts into an affiliate link.

It's definitely worth looking into as they have lots of different affiliate programs, making it easier to manage them all under one account.

What are you thinking of doing with Amazon?

US law, some states in the USA enact laws that ecommerce sites had to give them the names, earnings and a host of other data about each person selling something online in their state and tax them. The burden of all record keeping would be on the ecommerce websites. The states were hoping to increase their tax base.

They are actually allowed to operate in those states. But Amazon doesn't want the added overhead to comply with the state laws, so instead they just don't allow affiliates from that state.

Not the smartest move for those states that implemented their "internet commerce" laws. I'd guess there is more of a negative result for them than a positive one. Lots of little guys got hurt.

See, this is why I love this forum! Thank you all for the information not only on the alternative routes I can go with, but also why Amazon probably doesn't deal with NC (I believe Florida is another state that was on the NO list.. there were about 6 states I believe).

@jdeer, thanks for the heads up on it. I'm still not completely sure yet as to what I'll be doing with Amazon, but I wanted to look into doing some Squidoo lenses on a good micro niche or two and then promote affiliates as well. But of course, surprise on me when I noticed NO to NC. Lol!

@val, thanks for the suggestions as well to Linkshare.. I may just look into that. Didn't that bum you out when you started putting in your address and realized, where's North Carolina?? And then realize they're not allowed? Lol! That's how it happened to me anyway. lol!

@Mary, I'm wondering that myself... if I can use Squidoo's tools and get it that way, that'd work okay as well.

Thanks again everyone for the quick replies! I appreciate it!

Yep; Colorado in its infinite money grubbing wisdom did the same thing. The 5 or 6 highly successful marketers are still selling their programs and paying their taxes like they always did. The rest of us were deprived of a source of income and the state is no better off economically than before. Californians managed to get their law rescinded, I hope it happens in CO as well.
