I think I'm done with the affiliate thing

Sometimes you just have to admit to yourself that one method, no matter how potentially lucrative, just isn't for you. Over the few years that I've been looking at affiliate marketing I've made a grand total of $20.

I'm just not interested enough to put in the work. Even when I come up with ideas that get me excited I don't follow through.

Going back to when I was a kid my interests were in doing good things for the world and developing new ideas. Being a salesman was never a part of the plan until I discovered internet marketing.

I think that I need to rediscover my old passions and way of thinking. The types of things that I was interested in as a kid and a teen are still things that I can see myself getting into today.

So aside from a solitary site that I may put a little work into here and there, I am (actually finding myself very hesitant to say this) quitting affiliate marketing. This is not for me. It doesn't fit into my passions or interests. And since it's not a job where I -have to- get it done, I'm not going to get anywhere with it.

From here on my focus needs to be on those things that I can realistically see myself doing. Not selling other people's stuff, but offering my own. Developing new products and services. Solving a problem. Giving something of value to the world, be it material, intellectual, or philosophical.

This isn't the first time I've "decided" that I was done. It is the first that I've come out and said it. I guess I just needed to both admit to and convince myself that this path is not for me.

I'm going to end this by saying to those of you who are struggling with internet marketing, there's more than just a few methods to success. If you look in the offline world there are many, many types of jobs and services. Some you can do with a minimal amount of learning, others you need years of education combined with experience in lower positions related to the profession you're trying to get into. The web really isn't too dissimilar to this.

The '90's were the pioneer days of the internet. Today it's akin to the wild west. It's all about either finding an opportunity or, more often than not, making your own. And who knows, you just might find a nice little deposit of digital gold in the process.

Do what you will. As for me I have some prospecting to do.

So, where are you planning to go from here? What do you want to do specifically?

I intend to start with a membership site. I have a good idea on how I want to operate it. Now it's a matter of figuring out the specifics and putting together a solid plan.

Assuming I build up a fair amount of funding from this I want to start getting more creative with my endeavors. It may involve hiring a programmer or two, hence the need for extra funding.

That's a pitty to hear, because there are many people who earn a living with it.
Anyway, good luck with your new life!

Looking at aff marketing would not produce anything, so I'd agree. Making $20 over a couple years also suggests you never really tested it all. All I know is a membership site takes a lot of work as well.

To me it's like saying, "I don't want to be a car salesman. Instead I'm going to open a club." The first option may be more lucrative for those who are good at it, but the second could be more fulfilling for the person running it. It's not necessarily the amount of work involved but whether it's something I'm genuinely interested in doing.

You realise to a large degree that affiliate marketing and your own products are essentially very similar things right?

Both require visitors to your website, and to be able to convert those visitors to customers.

Yes you make more money with your own product but you also have to worry about customer support, new versions of your products, and in same cases paying affiliates to promote your product.

Both need a marketing plan. Unfortunately it's normally not as easy as you might be thinking e.g. create a product and they will come, it usually does not work like that.

I've also had a membership site with thousands of members - There is a ton of work required to constantly produce new content each money to keep them happy.

Not trying to talk you out of it, I've had a lot of success with both my own products and as an affiliate.

Maybe you should consider finding someone to partner with - Get them to do the marketing while you create the products?

Affiliate marketing can make you a lot of money BUT you have to put time and effort into it and if you do not have the enthusiasm or passion for it then you are right to give it up. If you don't have the mindset for it then you will not succeed.
As for membership sites, they do take a LOT of work to keep it up to date with fresh content but if you are determined then good luck to you, maybe like Tim said try to find a partner to help you.

While I agree that creating a product is usually the better path to take than just affiliate marketing alone, you will still need to understand how to sell your own product instead of someone else's. If you are unable to sell other people's products where a lot of things like creatives are already done for you, how do you plan on building your own product and driving traffic to it?

Affiliate marketing isn't a method. It's a way of getting paid.

    It's a business model.

You can combine product creation and affiliate marketing. In fact, you'd be wise to do so, in my opinion.

An excellent decision that's bound to be lucrative and one you'll be proud of. I wish you all the luck in the world.

Now if only I could figure out how to fully exploit this ability, I'd be "just looking" all day long.

If you are running away from affiliate marketing because you don't like the idea of selling, you have to stop and think. I am sure you can come up with great ideas that can change people's lives in big ways. But you understand that you still have to sell those ideas to people right?

It can be a membership site or anything else you want, but even the greatest of ideas don't sell themselves. Someone has to do the job. You have to convince others that your idea is really good, it has value and get them excited about it. You end up being a sales person again. At least you need the skills or hire someone who has it.

Affiliate marketing is one of the thousand things you can get involved in, it is not even a real business. So don't hesitate to move on. You definitely don't enjoy it, so you need to find something you are passionate about. But if you are looking down on the idea of selling, you will be better off changing that mindset. Because even if you end up taking a job, you will need that skill. Everyone is involved in selling one way or the other. Some do not realize it, some don't want want to admit it, but that do not change a thing.

Best of luck with your new project.

It's not that way at all. I'm looking forward to getting started with selling what I have to offer.

I am simply recognizing that I'm not going to go anywhere with affiliate marketing. I don't want to sell other people's stuff. Even when I do find something that I believe is a good product when it comes to hawking it it just doesn't feel "right" for me. (Don't ask me to explain)

As far as all the comments about the amount of work involved I guess I can't blame you all for that. The subject seems to be a prominent issue in the forum and in the overall business of internet marketing.

I'll put it this way. I have a history of being borderline obsessive about completing tasks that I want to do even if I don't really get much out of it. I need to channel that into something that could become profitable.

Maybe I just think differently than most others. Where many may say that they don't care whether they get paid as an affiliate or as a product owner, I do. I'd rather do the work trying to sell something that is developed the way I want and that I control. That's at least a part of the issue anyways.

You should not do work that you don't like, you'll never succeed in it if you don't find joy in what you are doing.

Or you should sell some affiliate-product that is ''good for the world''

Some people just don't get it. If its not working then find something that works. Get your butt in gear and at least build a list you can't go wrong there and I am sure you'll make more then $20 in a year!
