Big Question about 301 re direct

I have a site that is a PR4 site wide
It is currently sitting page 2 or 3 for some valuable SERP
There are several thousand links to existing site url

I am considering changing the url to add in the major search phrase to help the SERP get to page 1

So it is currently (example not site) www.abcdefg.com

I am considering a change to www.abcdefg-keywords.com

My question is if I re create the site exactly as it is now but change to the new url and 301 redirect every page to the new page
WHAT WILL I LOSE ?
and how long will I lose it for ?

Some solid advice based on experience with this would be appreciated

I personally would leave the site as it is, get your new domain and redirect it to the current site.

Yes well thanks for the comment BUT this is a VERY VERY competitive search term and we alraedy have thousands of links and articles social bookmarks and uncle tom cobbly and all.
If you do agoogle you will often find that the top results have the keywors in their url I have seen sites that have very few backlinks high in SERP just because they have the keyword in the url.
All of my new urls have the keywords in them and generally they romp up the SERP quickly (providing they have good content) with just afew backlinks.
In the selling business (we sell actual physical products) its all about SERP position with the alternative being to spend spend spend on ADwords.

So if i had my time agian I would have put the keywords in the url on day 1
What i am now asking is what the effect of a 301 redirect will be on the existing scenario

  • leave it alone

after a 301 I usually get the pagerank to follow with the next update but never seem to regain the previous google rankings

I just had a look at the Google answers as suggested here and it says
The PR will get transfered BUT you should contact every site that links to the original and get them to update the link.
that task would be out of the question
This answer explains what digitalproductreporter is saying about PR seems to follow but SERP does not.
