Without knowing your niche and knowledge, you need to go into the sub niches and target the long tail keywords. That is, keywords with more than four words in the phrase. For instance, if you were targeting something like lose weight which has high competition, you would look at targeting something like exercises to lose weight quickly which is more specific.

Sometimes you need to forget about the competition too. Whilst it may be competitive, you can still get a foot in the door. High competition usually means there is money to be made

As Benjamin pointed out above, the fact that there is competition is not a bad thing. If you found a niche where there was none it would indicate to me that it's not a profitable one.

You can succeed in a competitive niche. You need to make sure that you have a good USP and that what you are offering is superior in terms of quality and content than that which is already on offer in the niche.

Can you look into a sub-niche of your orginal niche....look at your keywords and see if there is something in there that can be used...check out the level of competition for those words...i.e. if you are looking at acne as a broad term, try exzema as a sub-niche

If you are finding it hard don't worry, sometimes these things take time. What you will learn is that the more you search for profitable keywords the more you train your brain to think in that certain way.

I remember struggling when I started. It does get easier to the point where you have more keywords than you have time to take advantage of them.

As others have said, just keep drilling down. It only takes one good keyword to make some money with (though good to diversify).

You may also want to take a fresh look with a different niche.

Here's an additional suggestion to what's already been offered.

        1. Choose a competitive niche that you have an interest in or passion for

        2. Drill down into the exact match keyword phrases most targeted to your passion that get 3-8,000 global searches per month - note those phrases

        3. Visit the NextMark media list finder. Type this phrase(s) into their search bar. Are there several results that are returned, especially sizeable email lists? If not, scrap this niche and go to the next one. If there are, proceed to step 4.

        4. Type that exact match keyword phrase into the Google search bar

        5. Visit all the sites on the first two pages of results spending no more than 30 seconds on each site. Look for and jot down their purpose, USP or mission and their main selling product. If it's not obvious cross them off the list and move on to the next site.

        6. Review all your results and group them by purpose. List all the main products or services that group sells.

        7. Ask of each group:

        - Can I sell this same product as an affiliate?
        - Can I create or find other similar products not being sold in this niche?
        - If I were a consumer in this group, what would I want to buy? If no one sells it, maybe this is the answer to what you can sell.
        - What service could I offer the group that no one else is offering?
        - Could I teach or help the customers of these businesses in my own mentoring or membership site?

Competition can be a good thing if you join the niche and offer:
        (a) something that has been neglected by other businesses
        (b) a product that is slightly different or solves a problem in a unique way
        (c) aggregation of the top solutions to common problems in the niche
        (d) a place for consumers in the niche to learn, associate, or hang out
        (e) news, reviews, or editorials about the niche
        (f) new and cutting edge products that no one else has offered yet

I hope this might get your creative juices going a bit ...
