What is a press release?

What exactly does it do? I see some fiverr gigs doing them. I know they good for promo, but how does it work?

    A press release, news release, media release, press statement or video release is a written or recorded communication directed at members of the news media for the purpose of announcing something ostensibly newsworthy. Typically, they are mailed, faxed, or e-mailed to assignment editors at newspapers, magazines, radio stations, television stations, and/or television networks.
    Websites have changed the way press releases are submitted. Commercial, fee-based press release distribution services, such as news wire services, or free website services co-exist, making news distribution more affordable and a level playing field for smaller businesses. Such websites hold a repository of press releases and claim to make a company's news more prominent on the web and searchable via major search engines.
    The use of press releases is common in the field of public relations (PR). Typically, the aim is to attract favorable media attention to the PR professional's client and/or provide publicity for products or events marketed by those clients. A press release provides reporters with an information subsidy containing the basics needed to develop a news story. Press releases can announce a range of news items, such as scheduled events, personal promotions, awards, new products and services, sales and other financial data, accomplishments, etc. They are often used in generating a feature story or are sent for the purpose of announcing news conferences, upcoming events or a change in corporation.
    A press statement is information supplied to reporters. This is an official announcement or account of a news story that is specially prepared and issued to newspapers and other news media for them to make known to the public.

      Thanks. So in IM, certain sites get feeds of press releases? Hence, why they good for promo. I am guessing creating press releases is posting to said sites who get press release "feeds"?

        Exactly. Concise and to the point.

        If you don't know what a Press Release is and how to use them, then I suggest you stop and take time to learn the internet marketing fundamentals. This will help you build a solid foundation for you online businesses. Without this basic knowledge it will be difficult for you to make money in IM.

    Well as far as I know it builds readership plus some quality backlinks to your website and a little traffic too sometimes... No 4th benefit I can figure out from it yet.....

    Submit a PR to PRWeb and PRLog and it generates traffic, at least 800 views or more. If the PR is a good story, it may get syndicated to other news sites. Costs $80 for PRWeb's basic submission.

      I find this interesting as at one time it was free to submit to PRweb and now they have a salesman who focuses on getting people to purchase the product.

      Seems harder to find free places to submit press releases.

      I use Ezine to submit PR.

        I thought I better correct myself here.

        Recently realized that I screwed up on this post.

        I FORGOT the name of PR site I use to use and thought it was PRweb and one day (years after and recent) it dawned on my it's not PRweb I use to use it was PRlog.com.

        It is STILL free.

        I apologize if I threw anyone off :-/.

    Samuraig is right on. Press Releases if well written and distributed properly can result in backlinks as well as visitors to your site. I have used them to successfully get clients' webistes indexed on Search Engines, and improve Search Engine Optimization.

    Knowing how to write a Press Release if critical to its success.

    Press release are a good way to get instant publicity and also helps in SEO. It has 2 steps:

    A press release or a news release is a written announcement directed at members of the news media about something claimed as having news value. This encourages the journalists to write a news article on the subject giving you a lot more exposure for free. Press releases can announce a range of business news such as: scheduled events, awards, accomplishments, new products, new services, executive promotions, sales and other financial data, etc.
    Concisely written and targeted, press releases draw media attention to newsworthy events.

      We used PRWeb for one of our previous web companies. Increased traffic was NOT the primary outcome (but could be due to the writing itself or the appeal of the product), but what did happen was a significant number of quality backlinks. We quickly added some serious PageRank to our site as a result. The weird part is that even 2 years down the road, I still occasionally see a PRWeb referral visit to our site, so there is some permanence behind the links.

      Sometimes you get "lucky" and the right media outlet picks up your story and runs with it, and oftentimes you will find tech bloggers giving you more mileage by blogging about you after seeing the PR.

      All in all: I'd say its worth it depending on the nature of your business and as PART of an overall public relations and marketing campaign.
