Email Opt-in Box and Spam laws

Hi guys,

I am making my first email opt-in boxes and was wondering if there is any right or legal way to do it so that it abide by the Spam laws?

Can I just put a form staying 'Enter your email to download the free ebook'?

Or should I state asking them to subscribe to my newsletter to get the ebook, like 'Subscribe to our newsletter to download the free ebook'?

Is there such thing as a 'legit' or legal way to ask for opt ins?

Would really appreciate any help in this and thanks in advance

Although single opt-in is not illegal, it's best to use double opt-in to reduce potential spam complaints.

The wording on the entry box can say whatever is persuasive, but your site needs a standard detailed privacy policy tab.

Using the opt-in form provided by a service like Aweber or the free (for squeaky clean offers) mailchimp?

Offering visitors a free ebook in return for subscribing to your newsletter seems fine -- just make it clear to them that it means they will receive more mail from you in the future unless they decide to unsubscribe. I think the main thing you want to avoid is sending them emails too often and/or promoting products/services that are unrelated to your niche. That will very likely result in unsubscriptions and spam complaints.
