Low competition, high search volume keywords? Yeah right!
People love keyword research on this board. But following the old worn out advice of "low competition, high search volume" will get you about where everyone else is, broke and still trying to figure out how to make money online. I've already talked about how most of you determine competition for keywords and how it's flawed here: MYTH-BUSTER: Google Total Results is NOT "Competition" For A Keyword So today I'll cover the other half, high search volume, and where you might find some opportunity most are missing. Why Keyword Tools Are Kinda Lame Keyword tools show HISTORICAL data, or searches that already took place. Do you really care how many people searched for your keyword yesterday? Not me. I want to know how many people will search for the keyword TOMORROW! Two reasons: 1. Everybody and their sister's dog builds sites on what people searched for yesterday. 2. I want high search volume keywords that people aren't building sites about yet. So how do you find keywords that tons of people will be searching for but internet marketers aren't building pages for yet? Predictive Seo You simply predict (or guess) what will get searched for and start building pages for it. For instance: The origin of the idea: Predictive SEO Ever year there will be a world series, you could build pages for "xyear world series winner" or "xteam a wins the world series", BEFORE it happens. Ever year there are new holidays. An old favorite of mine is to build pages with the holiday and year in front of it. 2010 valentines day. 2009 christmas. Etc. Every year tv seasons have a finale that gets crazy searches, start building now for future episodes like "season 5 show winner" etc. Follow press releases and build pages NOW for products that companies are planning to release. Can you predict any keywords that will be hot in the FUTURE for your niche? Are you building pages around the keywords yet? How early to create predictive pages? I like to do my predictive seo pages 6-9 months in advance of when the event will or might happen, preferably nine months. For instance if I was targeting "2010 calendar" (people buy those things like crazy at the new year) I might start building the page between now and march. Just One Of Many Alternative Ideas Predictive seo is just one of many ways to find high search volume keywords that your smart competitors are already targetting and your poor ones are forgetting about until it's too late. |

I agree, this is one technique for SEO.
But I called it "keyword speculating" when I first wrote about it here in the Warrior forum in 2003. I gave my Bomber members the keyword "Labron James" when he was a jr in high school and no one heard of him. We actually had a contest each new year for speculating on what keywords may get hot. Also, in the old Warrior forum, I explained how to create pages now for future hurricanes, since the names are released years in advance. Another example was given 6 months ago to make sites about "president obama" and "president" mccain, anticipating that one of them would be president, therefore getting 6 months head start on link building and "maturing". Other suggestions are creating sites/pages for American Idol contestants as soon as the list is created and in a few months, a couple of them will be very popular search terms. However, I totally missed on "glo-fish", a genetically altered fish that litterally glowed. I thought they'd either be big as pets, or the controversy over genetically altered animals would put them in the news. Neither happened. But this is the key to keyword speculation, picking keywords that will <hopefully> be picked up by the press and become populuar in the media, and using the head start to gain links and "maturity". |

or - - you could build the page for the keyword and THEN get it hyped in the media with press releases and news stories.
That would give you a lot more predictability in the method. |

I'm getting set for the end of the world. Its coming so there must be SEO opportunities there. jk
Seriously though, great thoughts. I have often mused about this type of thing but have failed to seriously do anything about it. |

Great ideas being share!
Obviously this technique will be more beneficial to those looking to market seasonal or news-related niches, but the possibilites are endless. Winner of Survivor? Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (movie comes out July 2009)? 2010 Winter Olympics? Upcoming video game releases? And on and on.... And most sites/blogs may fail miserably. But one hot site/blog could really pull in some major dough. Make up for all of the duds. KateD |

There is some merit to this idea but it only goes so far. In most mainstream niches, 99% of keyword searches will follow the historical pattern so it's not as if you can eliminate conventional keyword research.
For instance, I'm in the blood pressure niche and the vast majority of searches are and will continue to be built around the keyword phrases high blood pressure, lower blood pressure and hypertension. |
