Buying YouTube Views is a violation

Views and 3rd party services

Viewcounts are incredibly important to us here at YouTube. They serve as a way to recognize and surface great content, and are one of the most scrutinized measures of popularity on YouTube. Careers have been made because of viewcounts - whether you're simply making a music video with friends or on the way back from the dentist, views matter.

Since views are so important, it's no surprise that there are companies whose entire business model is built on converting your cash into views. We understand that promotion can be a highly effective way to grow your audience, and we encourage you to promote your content on and off of YouTube. However, we want to be clear that paying for views obtained through some of these companies could very well be a violation of our terms, and one that we take very seriously.

    It goes on to say:

    What isn’t ok?
Services that attempt to gain views through automated means or that force or trick viewers into watching videos are not ok. This could be through a variety of means, including, among other things, deceptive layouts on third party websites that trick viewers into playing a video when they click unrelated elements on the page. It might also be serving up embedded videos instead of intended content, serving pop-unders, re-directing and/or a variety of other methods people use to try to inflate viewership.

At the end of the day, anything that artificially increases the number of views, either through the use of automatic systems or by serving up videos to unsuspecting viewers, is against our terms. Videos and accounts that are found to be in violation of our terms may be closed down and removed from YouTube.

I hope the debate can be considered closed.

It's unethical and I never was a fan of bending the internet to one's will that way. The net is a great tool that we have and often take for granted, and so is the opportunity to be involved in IM. Buying views and fake testimonials are just bad for our business in the long run. It makes the internet a less trustworthy place to be.

    You surprised?

Youtube is owned by Google, who hates any sort of attempts to game the system.

Seems like Google 101 to me.

What company wants their system to be gamed at all?

None, but Google is notoriously strict about it.

I cant see why anyone would want to buy views in the first place anyway. I'd rather have 3 real taregted views than 300 meaningless ones.

It's like putting water in your petrol tank and telling people your car will go for miles!

If you read between the lines they said that they rank videos based on view counts. That means with 300 meaningless ones you can get a higher rank which will mean a higher rate of meaningful views. Not that I am saying you should buy views... I am just saying why someone would be tempted to.

      Humans are all stupid sheep.

When they see a video with a 1000000 views they'll want to click on it thus adding "real" views to "fake" views.

When your video has a 100 real views one one will care for it or want to view it no matter how great it is.

Money makes Money and Views make more Views.

Buying/selling links is against Google's webmaster guidelines but it always happens and will continue to do so. Same goes for Youtube.

What about engagement ads? That doesn't sound like you are buying views, just promoting the video even if it's through a PPC. I just want to be sure they are clear on what they are looking for.

People buy views to get a "push" to help them get started.
A video with really great content might not rank well, but when you get views it boosts it's ratings and can then bring in more traffic.

As far as "Is it ethical" is another debate which I don't feel like talking about.

Youtube is 99% garbage like most of the internet.

Youtube obviously does not care about it as every "fake" thumbnail with garbage content is never taken down.

I basically ignore any video with a lot of views unless I'm certain about what it is. I find the best videos have very few views, go figure huh?

    Re: Buying attention is prostitution

    Fixed that for you.

Buying likes? Views? Clicks? Anything that people normally do when you've actually done something right?

The people you hire are whores, no less than someone you hire to blow you in a back alley.

They don't really like your fan page, or want to watch your video, or think your blog is worth reading, or find you irresistibly sexy. You're just paying them to pretend.

    Which is pretty sad, really.

You can definitely promote your videos by buying views and likes, but you need to ensure that the company is getting your video viewed and liked by real people. If this is done using fake Youtube accounts with help of robotic scripts, this will be termed as a violation.
