amazon s3 good for serving large images as well as videos?

hey - quick question, I've been thrilled with amazon s3 for serving video, for years now... takes a lot of bandwidth load off my servers...

quick question: does anyone know if amazon s3 would also be good for serving large images? I'm thinking I could increase my page load time a lot if I put my big images (which I really like and jpg/gif optimize anyways), on amazon s3 for faster page loads for my main sites? any drawbacks/issues?

seems like offloading a lot of content delivery to s3 makes it easier to stick with shared vs dedicated linux boxes, for faster/better content delivery

    Amazon S3 is good for EVERYTHING!

    I currently use it to serve all of my sites' banners that affiliates use. That way my own server doesn't get hammered. I wouldn't use it for the images on my site though.

    I have yet to be charged by them too. I guess I'm still in the free tier.

      You can use it for any kind of mass data storage. I host videos, banners, images, anything I need.

        Yeah I've only recently got into this (free tier) to serve downloads for my WSO. Had no issues and found it very easy to use.

        The only potential issue, is that if you are on a paid level - and your product/asset gets pirated or goes super viral - then it could get to be more pricey than other options.

          If you get pirated, just change the download file name. Be sure also to update the links in your download pages.

    s3 is good , but there is another one that is cheaper and you get more gigs. I forgot the name of it though. I think its "network" something. If you ask some people they can tell you.

      hey thanks everyone, much appreciated... it's amazing how much better my whole business works, since migrating all my video to amazon s3.

      It looks like moving some of the big images (>50k) to that could make a big snappy speed improvement in page load times... glad to hear good comments from everyone; thanks much. I'll test page load times (index1.htm on my server, vs split test index2.htm with all big images hrefd to s3) and see what the difference in pageload times is. it's so much easier nowadays with all these resources, than 10 years ago.

      good point about tracking vs piracy; that's one thing I never could figure out, is how to track log usage per media asset (like how many times/how many gigs was myvideo.flv viewed/bandwidth per asset last week? like cpanel awstats)... though at least it's easy to upload and 'make public' and that's it

    S3 is great (with Cloudfront as a CDN - content delivery network). You also want to make sure you have some sort of caching plugin on the site you are serving to make sure thing are moving at light speed.
