How I lost $140 in 2 Days to Facebook Marketing and How you can learn from my Mistake!

by Alex Mensah 28 replies
I nearly fell off my chair when I saw that my Paypal account
had been charged twice in 2 days from Facebook marketing and I didn’t even know it.

I know you are probably wondering how the heck that happened?

Well, you know how they tell you track everything…they are absolutely right!

I began a Facebook PPC campaign promoting a particular Fanpage.

But when I first created the campaign and checked my email address tied to this facebook account I saw an email that had come in 4 hours later saying facebook had rejected my ad. Yah, facebook is really picky like that!

So I created the same campaign again very doubtful that it was going to get approved…so doubtful that I didn’t even bother checking that email address that all the notifications go to. BIG MISTAKE!

Facebook did approve my ad! And I had set my daily budget to $50 thanks to some so called guru who was wise enough to say set a $50 spending budget they will never charge you that much. Well he was wrong, they served up enough impressions to charge me the $50/day and for the two and a half days I didn’t monitor it I ended up getting charged like $145 dollars in facebook ppc costs.

Now the funny thing, well not so funny then, was that I didn’t even know my ad was approved cause I didn’t bother checking my email for the facebook alert. So that Ad went live sucking money out my paypal account. Boy I’m I kicking myself in the butt right now but I’m glad I caught on to it when I did otherwise…it could have been MUCH WORSE! I wanted to write this so that you hopefully will never make the same mistake I made when it comes to tracking your marketing.

The worst part is conversions were not great either I needed to test and tweak a couple of things but for now no facebook marketing for me. I just don’t have the budget for that right now.

So please learn from my mistake and track everything you do online. If its a website you can track it with google analytics. If its a wordpress website you can track it with “statpress visitors.” If it’s a particular link you want to track to see how many people are clicking on it use “pretty link plugin” on the wordpress platform. And for goodness sakes check your email.

Hope this helps…I would love to hear your thoughts and comments on this. And if you have any other ways to track please feel free to share. No bashing me though lol! ok just a little!

    OUCH!

    Sorry to hear that Alex.

You cannot control what you cannot measure.

I think this is also a lesson in "listening" to "gurus" and applying it in your own way.

Too many people just do what people they look up to as if they were employees following instructions.

    Business owners think laterally.

Hope you find something that does work for you Alex!

    Best,

I did something similar. YouTube wanted way too much to promote one of my videos. So I bid about 1/20 that amount and forgot about it. But the day must have arrived when they had no other takers. Racked up thousands of impressions pretty quick. Since people were not clicking through and buying I paused it as soon as I received the bill.

Yeah, they can rush the ad impressions on you as quickly as they want to. It'll be good to receive an alert to your smart phone everytime you get an email from facebook. That way you'll be kept updated everytime something new happens to your account.

yeah definately, i should have linked that particular email address to my iphone but it's just it wasn't my primary email so i didn't bother and I wasn't really sure they were going to approve my ad since they were being pricks before! But I will definately link that email to my Iphone now. ! thanks

Yeah you are right martin, I should have set my min budget to like $10 bucks/day and then tweaked my ad campaign from there depending on how things went!

I had a similar experience promoting a CPA offer at POF (Plenty Of Fish). They cleared my account balance in 3 days of advertising (£170)!! That was one big lesson so now I check and check again to make sure things are going as they should.

That was a hard thing to read, probably much harder to experience....

BUT, you are taking it like a champ.

That is the way with any business, you will make mistakes and lose money in the process but as long as you learn from it you are on the right track.

Lesson learned the hard way Alex.. Don't be lazy when it comes to tracking

Unless you have a lot of money to burn I suggest $50 a day budget for you first campaign is far too high, $10 should be enough until you find out what is working. PPC isn't a sprint it needs a lot of care and attention to get it right and you could certainly expect to lose money with initially until you get things betters optimized, take it steady until you improve your conversion rates.

thanks Tim, you read my mind exactly, from now on that budget is gonna be max $10 bucks a day and then I will tweak from there.

One little tip i that Facebook tends to offer better rates to people that promote to an in-site entity, such as an app or a page. I am still not sure how FB ads can "boost" your website. What does that even mean?

Hi Flores, thanks for that tip, yeah that question is the same question I asked, how does facebook boost your website? If anyone knows they should please answer. Or if I was to guess is it that google is tracking how many people land on your site and how long they stay (bounce rate) so facebook traffic gets you better rankings on google due to those factors? anyway just taking a stab at that question not too sure about that one.
