Google uses the description meta tag to generate site links. I'm unsure about the keywords tag.

No they have no effect on rankings but a description meta tag (<meta name=”description” content=”....”>) can help you with clickthrough rates if google uses it be used as the description in the search results. Add something human readable that will make people click on your result on google.

Yes they are still important :-)

Why leave them out? What's the point?

From what I've been reading, it seems the "Keywords" tag is useless because its been abused far too much by keyword spamming in the past.

I believe "description" is important as mentioned above, because its used to provide the blurb in Google.

There have been a few tests (I'll try to find) that indicate the meta KW tag is being used for recall, but as pointed out in the Google doc, not for rankings. Recall is a separate database function... Recall = show me everything in the data set that meets this criteria (a kw). Ranking = ordering that result from most important to least important.

This would come up when you have a fat fingered variation of a word perhaps, or some other anomalous situation. Though outside of testing, I can't really think of how recall would benefit a site, without ranking.

Kind of a trivial discussion...but interesting, nonetheless....

Most CMS and blogging software can insert the keywords and description meta tags automatically. The main importance of the description tag is that it's what is used to describe your site to visitors who find your from the search engines.

As far as robots and indexers are concerned though, meta tags probably aren't going to be the biggest deal breaker or maker.

Meta tags used to be important when the search engine robots were not so intelligent. Meta tags were used as a mechanism to tell the robots about what kind of content we carry.

Robots today are more intelligent and they do not quite give Meta tags as much importance as they used to. Robots have now learned to go through the content itself to index your pages.

Meta description however, is used by Google to display the gist of your content in the search results and as such is important. I hope that helps.

Yes thats pretty much what I am saying, but it still doesnt mean to leave them out all together.

Lots of thick stupid web designers tell their clients that they dont need them now..... the amount of websites I have taken on where this has been the case is tragic...

DOnt get me started on web designers selling SEO services...lol

There are literally an unlimited number of meta tags you can use. However most people are referring to the meta description and meta keywords when they use the term "meta tags".

As has already been pointed out, meta description is potentially the most useful as it is your call to action (although keep in mind that Google will use an abstract from the main body of your article if it thinks it is a better summary)
