Fellow UK marketers - which US host are you using?

The UK is so small and tidy, it's very easy to find a great host over here to deal with. Problem is, I want to set-up a few sites targetting the US, and everyone says that server location can affect Google rankings. It looks like finding a good host in the US is a minefield I don't want to go with a "quantity not quality" type host like hostgator, I always hear people moaning their sites are slow.

So, can any fellow UK marketers give me some suggestions for a good US-based host to use from over here? I'm interested in regular shared hosting, reseller accounts and cloud / clustered hosting. At the moment, I have a clustered hosting account with TSOHost.co.uk

Thanks!

I'm with Go Daddy shared hosting, they're pretty straightforward and reasonably priced.

Thanks guys, yep two very popular choices. How do you find the page load speed?

I used to use GoDaddy shared hosting - but recently switched to a HostGator reseller account. I noticed a dramatic increase in page load speed - particularly within WordPress admin interface, which I use on all my sites!

I agree, I live in the UK and used to be with Godady, I then switched to Hostgator, I noticed a big difference in speeds, also, there is no finer customer support than HG, they have a 24/7 help line.

        Hope this helps.

Have a look at hostgator mate, I use them to host my small sites, they're pretty reliable and don't kick up a fuss. But the server IP really doesn't make that much of a big difference as everyone says, I'd say it's more to do with whether you're geo-targeting well enough

Yeah I've seen a lot of debate about this, it's hard to know what the truth is. I guess, if anything, it could be slow page load times from UK > US that could hinder Google rankings... don't think Google likes that. Maybe I'll just trying 1 US targetted site on my UK hosting to try that out.

        Moaners moan.

For all we know, those sites are graphic-laden, with no attention given to image size or resolution, and/or they may be running very processor intensive server apps. There could be something as rash as 47 WP plugins w/ affiliate feeds from 12 different aggregators, or as simple as one very poorly written plugin to do something "sweet".

There are many reasons for a site to be slow, and the "moaners" may/may not have a clue as to why their site is slow. It's easier to blame it on the hosting company, than to try to determine the true cause.

I really don't understand your rationale, here. Given your first post, and the responses you received, I would think you would want to try US hosting for the new site that is targeting a US audience.

Putting that site on UK-based hosting won't teach you anything new. Regardless of how it fares, you won't know whether it would have done better if you had put it on a US-based server.

EDIT: looks like you had second thoughts, and have now reached a decision more in keeping w/ your intent.

I'm from the UK but not an expert.

I use JustHost for non geo-targeted sites and never had a problem.

If you scroll to the bottom of the home page and click (secret link) Secret Link : Just Host THEN get all the way to confirming you payment but CANCEL, they email you with a 50% discount. I got a years unlimited hosting for £40.

Plus you can use their SSL for free which helps with Facebook apps (if you like)

Hmmm some good recommendations for HostGator coming in then! Their "Baby" plan does look good:

    UNLIMITED Domains
    UNLIMITED Disk Space
    UNLIMITED Bandwidth
    $7.96p/m for 1 year

Is this what most of you are using?

I use GoDaddy mainly to purchase domains then host them all as sub-domains on BlueHost. With BH I can host as many domains as I wish and their customer service so far has been superb!

If you're targeting the UK specifically, and want search-engine traffic (one of my own niches is UK-specific), then you need a domain-name that ends in the letters ".uk" and you need UK-hosting. (I use a .co.uk domain-name and the outstanding, brilliant hosting at Heart Internet).

And then for all my other niches (not UK-specific), of course there's Hostgator.

If you're looking for a good UK host, I really can recommend TSOHost.co.uk, I'm on their new clustered hosting service:

Load Balanced Clustered Web Hosting from Tsohost

Use DOTNETMAG to get 50% off your first year.

Thanks to everyone for replying, I'm going to give Hostgator a bash for my initial US-targetted niche sites... looks like they aren't anything like as bad as I originally thought. If I get to the stage of needing a VPS, I'll take a look at the other companies mentioned.

I used to buy a dedicated server from Poundhost (UK) for my bandwidth-intensive site and i could not be happier. And yes, my site ranked pretty well for US searches.
