Will I get penalized by Google for this?

Hey WF; a noob question: I have a few wordpress niche sites and with the main article on the homepage as a static page. I also have that same article as a post; I do this so the readers will be able to choose this article as a "recent post". Will I get penalized by Google for having duplicate content on my site and is there a better way to do this? Thanks a lot!

It certainly isn't a good idea to have the same post twice. Don't worry about it being under recent posts. Just keep it as the static page (or post, if you prefer).

Yeh dont have it twice on the same site - kinda hitting on duplicate content right there. Keep it as a static homepage but remove from posts.

This is not a problem - there are ways to deal with this and Google know that it happens.

They introduced the canonical tag for this ages ago. You can tell Google which content is the original.

If you want to save yourself some time and hassle just get a wordpress plugin that lets you do this - something like yoast seo plugin.

I thought that canonical URL is for when there is is more than one URL for the same post....

    SEO advice: url canonicalization

sooooo the OP has 2 articles one is a page and one is a post.... and so has 2 urls... great...

But they are actually 2 different pages so its not just the URL that is different.... the pages are the same but different...

      Yes.

I actually think this is a red herring anyway because I've never actually seen Google 'penalise' any site for this.

Duplicate content doesn't make sense for your visitors so that's a good reason not to have it - for Google, they care about your visitors, so it's wise to keep that in mind for these things.

However, most blog platforms get used to show the latest post on the front page, so some level of same content on more than one page is very common and normal.

I'd avoid it if you can, but I highly doubt you will get "penalized"....

I think you're agreeing, and I think you're both right. Google's WebMaster Central Blog does, after all, contain the immortal line "Duplicate content doesn't cause your site to be penalized".
