What are you thoughts on the best way to drive free traffic to an affiliate site?

I think article-writing and submission to directories are the best, if u choose the directories right. I recommend Ezinearticles first.

Here are 2 to start with...
Article Marketing (look up Steven Wagenheim, Jeremy Kelsall)
Video Marketing (promoting products via Youtube)

Now, go research!

best way is get targeted traffic. So I would say writing articles and video marketing for seo purposes, and yahoo answers. participating in your chosen niche forums is good too, as you get buyers who will trust you. These are all free, unless you want to invest in professional article writers.

PPC is also targeted traffic, but can be difficult for newbies to have success with it, and will cost you.

ebay Auctions and classifieds is another source of paid targeted traffic, but with auctions you may need to be selling physical items. If you are selling a how to niche report, people probably wont type these terms on ebay unless they are looking for a physical item to buy

Of course, there are loads of other ways too, which may work for you such as, traffic exchage, classifieds, etc.. but these are not targeted traffic
