Windows Movie Maker question (codec filters)

I had some work done on my computer -- now the settings seem to be off.

Problem is, when I move video clips (which I KNOW are fine) onto the timeline, the audio is missing. Sometimes they also play back fast.

I fiddled with the filters (checking/unchecking different combinations), and I solved the fast playback problem -- but the no-audio problem persists.

Any ideas?

Also, how quickly does the checking/unchecking of codec filters get *APPLIED* to the project I have opened?

The checking/unchecking does not seem to follow any LOGIC. Same combo of checks seems to sometimes work + other times NOT work.

Do these changes get applied IMMEDIATELY??? If so, then they have me baffled -- and if not, then how can I pick a combo of checked/unchecked, then be SURE I am truly testing THAT particular combo? (so I can narrow down the correct solution).

I need to figure this all out RIGHT AWAY!!

Thanks!

Ok -- I figured it out to a certain extent.

The clips were recorded onto a memory card (via a digital camera). For some reason when those clips are downloaded onto my computer IN A GROUP (many selected), all of them get corrupted, and the audio does not transfer over (for some reason).

BUT, when the files are downloaded ONE FILE AT A TIME, then it's all fine.

Also (for some reason), it seems I cannot even RENAME and/or MOVE even an individually downloaded file -- if I do that, and then try to put that file into movie maker, I get the dreaded RED X.

When I rename and/or move a file, doesn't that truly rename or move it??? If it does, why does that "spook" movie maker so that it cannot treat it correctly? Why is movie maker so touchy/buggy? It only seems to be able to handle "pristine" or "virgin" files.
