Do Spam posting programs Skew your Visitor Numbers

I have a fairly new site that i was getting a pretty steady 100 unique visitors per day for my first 3 months.

I was getting so many spam comments that i decided to disallow comments on all pages and posts. The daily unique visitors dropped by 50%.

Now my conversion % looks better but my unique visitor #'s are down.

Are people that are flipping sites on flipper using this to their advantage?

    It depends on what you're using for analytics software. I am pretty sure that any of the big name ones like Google Analytics, Piwik, etc. disregard spam software and most bot traffic, at least in my experience. Spam software like Scrapebox doesn't actually load the page to trigger the javascript that those types of analytics software use.

    However, I'm not sure if that counts for software that reads from the access log.

    I used to own a forum and I can tell you that the # of spam members was insane. All day there were spammers on there, they probably made up about 75% of the traffic.

    I hated running a forum haha.

      You were lucky. I have a forum that I eventually closed off completely to new members and am letting it wither away. I'd say my spam count was over 95%. On some days it was 100% spam, mostly profile spam with no posts.

    the traffic plugin i use lists bots separately. maybe the big drop in traffic was people using scraping tools and coming to my site to manually post.

    Yeah guys it has to be rough on forum owners. I can imagine how bad it would be considering how many spam posts i have been getting until i turned all of my comments off.
