To all those selling their own product, what's more important?

Spending the time perfecting the product to: make it worth more, reduce refund rate, increase word-of-mouth of it being a quality product? Or do you spend more time working on things like SEO and your funnel, etc?

Personally, it looks as though I'm going to be writing my ebook product for several months. I doubt very much I'll be spending that much time on my site/SEO/funnel.

Which do you consider more important?

I agree, equally important. It helps to have a partner or two to be able to split up the tasks.

Actually, some think the sales page is more imporant than the quality of the product. Obviously, the product has to have substance but the sales page must bite, or wet the appetite for prospective customers with an offer, then maybe an upsell? Several months seems too long unless you are planning a big product launch, of which you have made a big deal of the marketing side of this launch beforehand. Even with big launches several months seems excessive. There is no point in having a perfect product without the traffic, sales funnel etc

Absolutely right the product needs to deliver but without a really awesome sales page no one will ever know how great your product could be. Your best combination is to have a really awesome sale page combined with a product that OVER delivers.

And one other thing, perfection will keep you broke. The moment I realised that there is no such thing as perfection my productivity increased 10 fold. I know its a contradiction to not strive for perfection as well as over deliver. Just focus on quality content, that is the most important thing. Believe it or not it does not have to be perfect.

I'm going to be separating myself from everyone else in my niche through my 'quality', since most of the other products out there are ****. I want the product to speak for itself, so to spea.

It's going to be a very long and extensive eBook and video series, but I'm a firm believer that if you're going to make a product worth selling at a decent/high price, it really needs to be excellent.

    Hey again Harvey,

I agree with Oliver, the more time you spend not having your stuff out there, the longer you will still have 0 in the bank...

I read a great thread on here the other week about a fellow Warrior making $500,000 in a year. He said the greatest thing he did that made it all work for him was "imperfect action", his stuff wasn't completely ready, there were spelling mistakes here and there, and things weren't perfected. But, if he had waited around, and not done anything, he'd still be in a bad situation.

Another great quote from my mentor is, "don't get it perfect, just get it going".

    hope this helps,

    Jack

They're equally important, but for different reasons. What you're talking about is the three pillars of a marketing program. To keep this thread from getting too long, this article describes the concept in detail...

The Three Pillars of Effective Marketing: Part I | Cashflow Copywriter

All three pillars are important but for different reasons. Conversions (sales) get people in the door, but your consumption strategy is where the big profits are made. I suggest creating your product, but only spending about an hour or two a day, then devoting the rest of the time to your connection strategy: list building.

Next, you focus on conversions and sales, then you use the customer feedback from those sales to tweak the product. That's really the best order. Otherwise, you could spend all your time making the product "perfect" according to your standards, only to find that the customers want something slightly different.

      Harvey, re your last comment:

I understand what you mean about separating yourself from everyone else in your niche through 'quality', but that's going to take time unless you can outsource and have several components of your product being developed simultaneously.

I've spent far too long on a product because I wanted it to be good quality and fairly comprehensive. Now I wish I'd tried a different approach:

See if you can launch parts of your product as it is being developed. Perhaps release a small number of videos that cover a sub-topic, then present a couple of your ebook chapters as a special report. Not only will this start to get your product 'out there' but it will also produce some feedback that you can feed into the rest of your product while hopefully providing some amount of income.

When all the components are completed you can then combine them and sell them for a decent/high price, but doing it this way will provide some income, feedback, testimonials and exposure along the way.

I know it seems counter-intuitive but the quality of your product is WAY WAY more important that your sale page or your traffic methods. Here is why.

    1. A customer is worth 15x more than a prospect (rule of thumb). This means you will create a real fan base if the quality of your product is first and they will keep buying from you.

    2. You will keep selling your product for many years so the additional work will be little at the end of the road.

    3. You will stand out of the crowd because you care more for your customers than the average. This always equal more money at the end of the year

Once you have a very good product, you can shift your attention to marketing
