imspot.com - How much is this domain worth?

IM - internet marketing

we have

Blogspot, techspot, gamespot - all famous websites with 'spot'.

I just purchased imspot.com but I am not sure whether I paid the right price for it. Not sure if it was a good deal.

So just mention your price... how much do you think it is worth?

I will mention the price I bought it for in 72 hours.

Let's see who comes close.

P.S. I bought the domain from buydomains.com. The domain was first reg'd in 2001. Also mods - the website is not there yet so I am not self promoting.

    I think it's worth less than $10.

Depends what you do with it.

    I guess you paid $80

and all clearly show what the site is about.

imspot says nothing to me so I also wouldn't pay more than $10 for it.

IM could be short for Internet Marketing. It could also be short for I'm as in I am.

As for cost, I wouldn't pay over $10-20 for it. Mainly because I'd never develop it.

most people in IM would know it's an acronym for internet marketing, but that's not the point.

sites like techspot & gamespot doesn't make this domain name any more valuable. they could have built their brand on any domain.

It might be good use for a blog or a forum, however, I disagree with the fact that the domain is valuable. I think it's worth somewhere along the lines of $40 - $120, not more.

If I had the domain, I wouldn't sell it for less than $150. I think it's worth between $150-$250 range. It would be a good domain name for a forum.

You didn't say if you bought it outright or made an offer, going by other names on that site it looks like you could have paid a tidy sum $800+ ??

Nice catchy name for the IM niche, a forum perhaps?

Well firstly, the age of the domain puts it's value well above the $xx that some people are quoting, but then the value of something is not what you think it's worth, it's what someone is willing to pay for it.

With no content sites linking in and with 73 global monthly searches (mainly probable searching for the .org TLD).

The domain age puts it at high $xxx/low $xxxx so I would go for $1,000 because it doesn't have any other decent features.

    IM - internet marketing
    IM = Instant Messaging
    IM = I am
    IM = Isle of Man

You can put up a nice IM (Internet Marketing)
    forum up there..

And then flip it for some nice money maybe 6 months
later. The domain itself is worth the reg fee TBH.

That's a bit of a contradictory statement. With that being said, I don't really see value in this domain name. But if you have development plans, it doesn't really matter. The biggest mistake is registering a domain thinking you can easily flip it for a profit when you have no plans for development.

I bought IMToday.com with the intention of starting a blog about Internet marketing 1 year back. I bought it for $600 and then sold it for $2000 6 months later.

If IMToday.com sold for 2 grand, don't you think imspot.com should be worth at least 4 figures?

6 letters. clear to understand for several niches. Could be worth over 1,000+ but only whenever the right buyer comes along. Do something with it to develop the niche potential to help your chances. But it's a bit of "hold-em" type of name. Eventually, someday, (could be years...) someone would want it, especially if you develop a bit of potential to it. Watch Sedo etc and you'll see worse go for more. It's all a crap shoot. Better than the stock market if you are willing to pay the upkeep.

Since I already profited $1400 from the sale of IMToday.com, IMSpot.com costs me only $1600 effective.

If IMToday.com did not sell, I would have built my blog on that - but I believe imspot.com looks better.

Joking aside, I REAALY hope (for your sake) you turn a profit on that.

There's NO WAY I would spend anything like that on a domain name that didn't come complete with an established site parked on it, already making money.

As others have pointed out in this thread, it's what you do with it that will determine if you make money here or not...

The days of making a quick buck by "domain flipping" are loooong gone...

As I already said, I am not looking to profit from this domain by reselling.

I am looking to build a long term IM blog and I really wanted a good easy to remember domain name to go with it.

I am going to invest a lot of time an energy into that blog and so I wanted a .com, a short one and a meaningful one. 5 years later I do not want to lose traffic because people mis-spell the site or go to a .com (if I am going with .net).

"It is worth if the right buyer comes along."

            I am the right buyer!

And, If my friends here at WF still think I made a bad investment, then I guess I just have to learn from my mistakes and move on. Just a very costly mistake this time.

Deepak, I apologise if I came across as insulting, I didn't mean that.

You state that you will be putting a great deal of time and effort into making this into a successful IM blog... if you do that, then there is no reason why that site could not be making you tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars within a couple of years...

I just think you could achieve the same results with aname such as www.deepaksIMblog.com, which would have only cost you $10...

I thought a lot about it and here are some of the reasons why I invested heavily in a domain name:

                - Though I could have used the domain I already own - deepakraj.com or registered a domain like you suggested - I did not want my name on the domain. Though there is a very less chance that I would sell the blog, having the name attached to a domain name is -ve if someone else wants to take up that blog.

                - I would feel a sense of push if I invested this much on a domain. It would motivate me to build a site around it. A $10 domain may not motivate me.

In the end, only content matters for a blog. Yes. But I am someone who gives a lot of importance for the domain name also - as a part of making a good brand.

Domains like these does tend to have good value in itself. One example was my sale of IMToday.com

                But some are unjustified.

Say, IMGuide.com for sale at $45,000! (see in buydomains.com)

I was planning to buy IMGuide.net for $875. It was actually listed for that price. But when I bid for it, the seller raised it to $3500! And it was a 2007 registered domain name. He rejected my offer and did not even negotiate.

I think this is a very good point although for me paying a tenth of what you paid would be enough for a push.

I highly disagree with that. You won't be able to achieve nearly the results he's looking to achieve with that domain. Reason being is that you need something catchy that's easy to remember and effective.

What most people don't seem to be getting here is that a domain that's over ten years old gives you instant credibility in the eyes of the search engines, yes you can lose it, but oppose it to a new domain that you have to gain it with and you're well on the way.

Providing you post good content, then there's no reason it can't be worth what you paid for it.

Seeing that the price of imspot.com is higher than I expected I presume it must have had a bit history previously. There is a hint in this page: bigblueball.com/forums/aim-support/14272-imspot-not-working.html judging by the forum 'Instant Messaging' the previous content of the website would definitely have had contents related to instant messaging, I presume something to do with IM soft/webware. If you wish to promote your merchandise it would be best if you reach those who are interested in IM webwares definitely!

Anyhow, if you have a few more k's, I would
suggest you develop a custom site, a web app
maybe. Something like a research tool, like
    SEOMoz.

Don't think about flipping IMO. Think about
developing the site into a recurring, no-work

That is a domain name that will stick in people's head provided there is good content there to back it up.
