Trackback Spam Driving me Around the Bend

I get genuine trackbacks, and spammy trackbacks, and the latter are so very. very annoying. They are endless!

Anyone using the software that creates fake trackbacks, please just don't. It's horrible to have to spend valuable clicks going through the notifications.

I added a plugin which has done a lot to reduce comment spam. Is there any way to reduce trackback spam? I don't want to turn them off altogether because I really appreciate the genuine ones.

I get this a lot too and yes, it is very annoying. Try installing an anti-spam plugin. I use growmap anti-spam. There's also WP capcha or bad behavior. Check em out and see which works best.

I totally agree, blog spam in general drives me nuts. I'm sure one of my blogs was targeted as part of some blog comment spam package as it was getting hammered with dozens of spam comment daily.

As others have said get a capcha system going and the spam will drastically reduce.

If you're using Wordpress you can disallow trackbacks in Settings/Discussion

There is also a plugin I use called "Simple Trackback Validation":

-Eliminates spam trackbacks by (1) checking if the IP address of the trackback sender is equal to the IP address of the webserver the trackback URL is referring to and (2) by retrieving the web page located at the URL used in the trackback and checking if the page contains a link to your blog.

    Thanks folks.

Danny, unfortunately not. It's a faked link to your site - I don't know how, but some software can do it.

Zafragroup, Mark and Rhonda I don't use captchas because they are inaccessible. Growmap is helpful against spam comments, but I will look at Simple Trackback Validation too - thank you!
