What Is Your Job Title...

Ok, so if you do IM full time and somebody asks you what you do for a living. What do you tell them?

The general public aren't as like minded as us and about 99% of them aren't going to know what a copywriter or affiliate marketer is.

So how do you explain to them what you do.

Personally I just tell them I am an online marketer and web developer. I never really go in to detail and rarely do people actually ask. They seem to get a little confused when I even remotely try to talk about the subject.

My business card says "Internet Marketing Consultant". There are people though that have no idea of what i am doing, especially older people.

So, to all the relatives, parents and older friends, i say that i am into the web design(which i am not) to make it a little easier on them.

I know that this is not the best approach but what can you do???

It's either I say online marketer or online entrepreneur. If they don't understand or know what it means, I give them my card with my site on it and it's up to them to figure it out. If someone is really interested to know what I do, then we'll have a lil sit down and explain for a bit what I do.

I normally tell people "internet marketer" (and not only to give John McCabe the chance to ask me how many internets I've marketed today). If people don't understand what it means, I then amplify by saying "affiliate marketer" and if that doesn't ring a bell, I then use Amazon as an example, rather than ClickBank, because everyone's heard of Amazon and can see how that works - even though Amazon's only a tiny proportion of my income, really.

Depending on who I'm talking to (such as if it's a family member, a friend, or a potential client), I say I'm a freelance writer, a website designer, or a an online marketing consultant for small businesses. I do all three things, so if I'm talking to someone who may be a client for one of the businesses, I give that title. If I'm talking to family or friends, I usually just say freelance writer, as I've been doing that the longest, and they understand what that means.

I say what I've always said. "I own my own business".

If they say what in or ask more specifically what I do, I say marketing and consulting.

I add the consulting because I've gotten some offline clients who I have helped with this too.

People usually don't understand what is a network marketer or an internet marketer.

The best thing to say is:

I sell products for other companies. I am like a middle man.

I do "Search Engine Optimization and Marketing". I say this not because I want to sound smart, but because it draws attention and people seem to be a lot more interested and ask more questions than if I just say "Internet Marketing".

I don't try to get everyone to understand what I do, so I don't have a good answer for it. Sometimes I say "I'm running my own business", sometimes I say "Internet marketer" or say "I work with online sales and marketing campaigns"... Sometimes I just say something completely different than what I actually do, like "I'm a student", if it doesn't matter what the person who asks me think or knows.... Sometimes I say "Taxi driver" just because I have a license to drive taxis.

I believe that everyone who is in our industry have a very different mindset and way of thinking than the average person.

I'm not so worried about what people think about me, or what I do. If they don't approve it, I'm not going to try to prove something to them.

As long as my my closest family and friends THINK they understand it, and don't criticize me, I will be very happy
