    For me it's exact search. It's always good to be #1, but
    the 1st page is great, if you can get there, you can very
    possibly move up to the top 3 spots depending on your keyword
    and the comp.

    I've learned that when using the google keyword research tool, you want to adjust the setting so that you will be getting exact results. I would try to look for keywords that have over 1000 searches per month. To check competition, I usually use market samauri or traffic travis.

    Yes I would. You'll be getting more traffic. This should be your goal and ranking your keywords. Get that first position.

    I'd say yes. Learn and apply good quality SEO techniques and this will help you out in the long run. As you've probably heard by many, Google is always changing so always do quality work so you're site don't lose rankings.

    You should always judge your competition and potential visitors by exact phrase. It is not necessary to get the #1 slot for a keyword but this is what you really should aim for as the first keyword typically picks up about 40%+ of the traffic. How competent you need to be with SEO depends on how competitive the keywords that you are going after are.
