Have any other Warriors heard this?

I was driving my fiancée to work this morning, and I had the radio on. A GoDaddy advert came on the radio. Now I listen to the radio a lot, mostly everyday, and I've never heard this advert before.

It was specifically aimed at people wanting to start an online business... I'm sure I heard the sales pitch state something like, "if you want to start your online business today, GoDaddy.com is offering" etc...

I'm not sure if I liked hearing this advert or not, as it only seems this sort of advertising is going to create more competition for us online marketers. It didn't bother me so much that I was angry or anything, I'd just like to hear your views on this, and if you think it's a good thing.

Thanks,

Jack.

They have adverts on the telly too.

I always have the television on in the background when i'm working and I was actually over at GoDaddy registering domains and thought they had put some stupid background advertising on their site; until I realised it was the TV.

Safe to say I felt like an idiot, getting angry over the background music when it wasn't even actually on the site!

I've been hearing tons of autoresponder ads on the radio as well. As the Internet becomes a bigger part of people's lives, you will only hear it more.

A good friend of mine in the UK, had caught Sky news at 6.00am in the morning and was treated to a GoDaddy advert. Through the incomprehensible hip-hop haze and the utterings of very mediocre women, he was just about able to understand that they were selling domains and hosting. Didn't know about who the agency godaddy was with, but thought they needed to be fired for it, the sad part is that godaddy thought it would work in the UK, but fortunately it didn't.

Haha, yes GoDaddy's form of marketing isn't really going to work 'as is' here in the UK.

I've also seen TV ads from 1&1 hosting in UK prime time slots too - and what's worse is they specifically talked about their website creation tool - "create your own website in minutes with our template tool' kind of message.

But as has been said, it's only natural to expect it as technology advances.

Yes, GoDaddy is the big one, but there are all kinds of other ones out there too depending on what media channel you log into. SquareSpace hits some of the technology Podcasts as other hosts/services target other markets. If you listen to talk radio you will often hear ads for Constant Contact.

It is what it is. It really doesn't hurt someone doing web design, especially since most people get into the project, realize how hard it is and how less than impressive their site looks. Then they are more willing to may someone with some skills to do it right.

If you are doing SEO it also broadens your market because now you have all kinds of people that have sites that don't have traffic or they can't find themselves on the search engines.

Godaddy's been advertising for years on TV and all over the place. No big surprise there and nothing to be concerned about.

Yes, the market will get more competitive as time goes on, but if you know what you're doing, you can still be successful.

Thousands of people are searching for ways to make money online every single day and most of them have no clue what they're doing.

Who here uses GoDaddy, btw? What has your experience been like?

I use GoDaddy, and I have for 3 years. Hosting as well as domain registration. They seem to catch a lot of flack here on WF, due to some past transgressions and horror stories, but I can't think of anything in recent times that is a game-killer.
I like the interface, and prices are on average, lower than competition (keep in mind, I don't like to hunt for a coupon every time I reg or renew). If you find a good coupon somewhere, other companies might be okay too, but I think Go Daddy's prices have been way lower in the long term. Interface I've found to be non-techy, although there are ads and upsells everywhere, I can't fault them for wanting to sell to existing customers (that's what we all would like to do ). Hosting is fast for the 5 bucks a month I pay (I use wordpress, pre-pay a deluxe plan for a few years, stack it with a coupon and it is cheap (unlimited domains). I've never had a squabble when requesting a refund when needed. They've changed a lot over the years and have grown and become somewhat more customer friendly, in my opinion.

Why would GoDaddy be considered as competition?

What are they offering which would conflict?

They're commercials suck to be honest the only reason people even go to their site after seeing one is to check out the girls they use in the commercials (this is GoDaddy). As for the other sites I don't really know what they're doing for ads but I think it's awesome that more people will be coming online. It widens how open the world will be to making money online. I mean aside from the forum and a few other places most people think the internet is just to gossip on facebook, find something on google, and watch someone get kicked in the nuts on youtube. Most people don't understand the power of the internet so they refuse to believe that it can be used as a way to build a lucrative business. If anything by more people coming online, our lives will become easier because that means more people to sell to and less skepticism when an online business is mentioned. It's understandable to be worried about it at first because it means change but with every door that closes a new one is going to fly open.

    Hey, Jack

If you are worried about this ad on radio, apparently you haven't seen what they are serving up on the television here in the U.S.
You may or may not be aware of it, but Danica Patrick is pretty much the poster girl of Nascar right now, and they are blazing ads left and right with some pretty goofy ads on the tv a lot lately.

I don't think there should be that much worry, though, as I don't feel that anyone truly needing webmasters or whatever will look to the tv for that.

    Just my thoughts.

Try to catch one of their tv ads though - Danica is pretty cute!

    Just my thoughts,
    Robert

I haven't seen the commercials, and I'm not worried lol not in the slightest. But it was the first advertisement I had seen off the internet for them, so it stuck out to me.

    Daniel

I'm not considering GoDaddy as competition at all :S my mere thought was it will cause more people to come online and that may mean more competition for niches and SEO and the rest.

On the flip side I totally agree with your views Danny Cutts about the fact that it will mean more opportunities for more experienced marketers to offer services to newcomers.

Maybe, but it sounds like you're looking at it purely from a B2C aspect, and there's B2B to think about too.

Many marketers (some here, even) make huge incomes servicing businesses. They consume as well, often at a higher rate, greater frequency and much higher price-points than individuals.

And let's not forget that businesses comprise of real people anyway. Anything that gets more of them active online, even if primarily in a business capacity at first, potentially expands the consumer market as well.

      It's not a zero-sum game.

Your average person seeing that ad and wanting to buy web hosting will be someone who already has a business. Consumers will be looking for people to make them sites, do their SEO, help with marketing etc. etc. etc. It opens FAR more opportunities than it creates competition, especially as most people don't have the time or inclination to learn design/programming/internet marketing from scratch (and the ones that do are usually just after the money and give up quickly).

Web hosting and site design would have reached consumer interest a long time ago had it not been for social media. Many people are selling via Facebook now, and social networks and hosted blogs have created that 'outlet' for people that us of an earlier generation had a website for.

I think some of you guys might have missed the takeaway here.

They're targeting people stuck in boring 9-to-5 subsistence jobs and they're buying morning drive time to do it.

What can we learn from this?

      1) Reach dissatisfied people early in the morning while they're still clearheaded. People often snag a newspaper on their way into the office. Around here we have 3 daily free papers. If you have an offer that converts well, why not buy an insert in one of those?

      2) Rather than pushing the greed button ("Make $50,000 in 30 days with our foolproof system!"), appeal to their need for escape. GoDaddy isn't telling people they can make millions with their websites; they're giving them permission to imagine a whole new life for themselves. Be that kind of marketer.

This is not a defense or attack on GoDaddy for their advertising.

Let's face it folks GoDaddy is a major corporation and knows how to market. They use every available avenue to keep their name in front of the consumers. It's the same thing you and I do as IM folks.

Think about this we have mentioned the name of GoDaddy how many times in this thread?

And you new folks may not realize but Google sends its bots here every day and I have no idea how many times a day, but its a lot. You may well find this thread is on Google page 1 because of the GoDaddy name. Talk about free exposure for them. and guess what they didn't pay you a dime for talking about them.

Very smart on their part in my opinion.
