A Perennial "What SEO Routine Really Works" Question

I know this has been asked before in many threads, but after trying many backlinking services and self-run SEO routines, we find ourselves back up against the question of "What's the best complete SEO routine to follow to "guarantee" pg 1 rankings that get there quickly and stay there."

Seems many services that promise stellar results actually don't produce much SERP movement, and even DIY solutions like doing exhausting work with SENukeX AND follow-up 2nd-tier backlinks-to-your-backlinks, often do not produce hard-won results.

Just to clarify: we're starting with 3-6 month old, well-laid-out affiliate sites, with meticulously-chosen keywords, search volume and competition-wise, and well-executed on-page optimization.

Like others, we've tried LOTs of backlinking services, some which focus mostly on (supposedly) high PR blog networks, some which throw in "x" number of blog comments, social signals, and Web2.0s...mostly with disappointing results.

Either our pages never move much in the SERPS, or they shoot up to page 1 or 2 quickly, with tons of backlinks, then 2-4 weeks later, they drop like Newt Gingrich's approval rating after a sex scandal, to a very low position, and all the backlinks seem to disappear (Matt LaCLear's service was a good example of the latter.)

Sometimes it feels like we're playing a game with all these different backlinking services and Asian VAs, where they promise great ranking just from their service, then later say things like, "Well your site was too new, you gotta give it 8-12 months," or "Well it's the Google dance," or "Well you gotta compliment our service by generating a lot of your own links & tiers, or it doesn't work."

Meantime, all we want is to get our well-researched pages on pg 1, in about 6 months max, 2-3 months much better, and have them stay there. We're hard workers, and won't shy away from a daily or weekly routine that requires much hands-on labor, just as long as it works, reliably, just about every time, without 99 different components & tiers to manage and hundreds of little complications that could blow the whole thing if you don't pick up every stitch.

So if you're someone who really knows how to do this, streamlined & true, and you're not just promoting your own service, we'd love your best response...thanks everybody
