    A video:
    - That has been viewed 23,000,000 (EDIT: 40,000,000) times in 2 days
    - Is trending on Twitter
    - Has been syndicated EVERYWHERE! (newspapers, TV news, radio, social media)
    - Is something that Marketers should study

... would be the Kony 2012 video. (That's as much as I will say about it - since politics isn't allowed here, I've merely contorted the view in the way a marketer would see it.)

Whether you like it or not - that's brilliant marketing.

What a great video! Fantastic marketing piece. Must have taken a page out of the Old Spice commercials.

I agree. Although I think it's much harder to go viral with a video about shaver blades, than it is with a video about a sensitive political subject.

      My favorite part!

Such a simple idea, and not to mention shaver blades have been around forever. I'd love to know how much he's making.

Finally got home and got to watch this.

    Wow...just...wow.

This guy (and...team...I'm sure he had a team that helped with everything from the video, to brainstorming and developing the marketing message, material, etc...)

As the world's largest marketing forum and community, I can't believe that there's not a TON of talk and discussion about the thousands...yep...thousands....of marketing lessons learned sprawled throughout that 30+ minute video.

We have members here who have had difficulty finding success, yet, all we have to do is looking to things like this video, dissect it, and extract a ton of lessons learned.

    Here's what I noticed (who'll be next?):

    1) I've never seen a more captivating video than what I just witnessed. From start to finish, the narrator was a REAL, genuine person....the way video progressed, intertwined his family/child, his personal mission, and made a very very compelling case for why the entire would should care about what he cares about. Talk about leadership....this guy spent a ton of time in Africa, that managed to construct a marketing message that has literally mobilized tens of thousands of people worldwide towards a single cause and vision.

Every facet of this, from visiting Africa, to engaging key leaders....and involving them in their marketing message in the way they have....is pure genius. Go to their site, and look very closely at the key leaders, both on the "celebrity" side of the house, and the policy maker side of the house....the selection of each, among all the celebrities and politicians that COULD have been picked, was extremely well thought out.

Again....pure genius. I really don't think I've ever seen anything quite like this before in my life. 32,000,000+ views in 2 days? wow....

This is the type of commercial that you would likely see on the SuperBowl. I must say, it is very well written and produced - and obviously has a high budget.

However, I doubt that it went viral on it's own. When companies spend this much on production they also spend it on distribution as well with the likes of this guy here >

The Secret Strategies Behind Many "Viral" Videos | TechCrunch

The reason I feel they paid to get it distributed, is because even though it was a really good production, I didn't feel the immediate need to share it, nor was I splitting my sides with laughter. My money says these views are the result of a planned campaign.

Although I agree with you 110%, we're talking about two different videos here.

The one linked in this thread is this one:

      http://youtu.be/ZUG9qYTJMsI

And I believe you're talking about the Kony 2012 campaign.

Still, I totally agree with what you said about it.

I'm sorry but what does africa have to do with his success?

Didn't see anything about it on his website.

And the 1 thing I guess I'd extract from this video is that humor sells, just like sex sells.
No secret really. Entertain people, and people will entertain you in return.

I'll have to research a bit more....

There are certainly several points made that I have to investigate further.

Claude Hopkins once wrote that a good marketer does not entertain or perform for people. And wasn't he like a genius at marketing?

So then I watch this video and all it really does is entertain. So if this is a good video, I'm gathering that all I need to do to sell my product, is make witty sales pitches that makes my market laugh. So apparently Mr Hopkins wasn't right about the whole performing thing being bad for marketing.

Recently our company has been contemplating using sex to sell our high efficiency energy systems. We've never done it before and this video is just making me realize how fundamental humans really are. Maybe we shouldn't be so afraid of using a hot girl in a bikini with a headline that reads:

Are your bills making you sWEaT? (would be a summer ad of course)

then a picture under this headline of a sweaty/sexy girl in a bikini holding her bills and making a pouty face. And under that picture another witty sentence about the benefits of energy efficient home systems with our phone number.

I don't know but it really seems humans are a lot more basic than you'd think. There was really nothing incredible about this video other than the humor, and honestly, I don't even see where all the money went. The whole vid was taped in a warehouse essentially. Those jokes could have been written by anyone with a bit of wit. Definitely don't think you need a big budget for the production. Maybe for the marketing yeh, but not just for making the video I don't really see it.
