Why no www being displayed on google search results?

I have been reading that Google reads the following URLs as different domains (thus, granting each one a different page rank):

www.domain.com
http://www.domain.com
domain.com
www.domain.com/index.html

For some reason some of my domains are being displayed as:

domain.com (without the www)

I would like for it to say www.domain.com instead in the Google Search results...can anyone please shed some light on this? Is there anyone to have Google read my domain differently so that the www gets displayed?

Thanks!

According to Google, setting a 301 redirect isn't necessary for the Google search engine if you've set the preferred domain, it's for other search engines and visitors.

"if you specify your preferred domain as www.example.com and we find a link to your site that is formatted as example.com we follow that link as www.example.com instead".

"Note: Once you've set your preferred domain, you may want to use a 301 redirect to redirect traffic from your non-preferred domain, so that other search engines and visitors know which version you prefer."

If you use the free Google Webmaster Tools, then in Settings there is the option of having your preferred domain as either:

    a) Don't set a preferred domain
    b) Display URLs as www.domain.com, or
    c) Display URLs as domain.com.

When I had the same problem I was told that I had to set up a permanent 301 redirecr from domain.com to www.domain,com - that way Google realises that they are not two seperate and different urls.

You might not like what I say - but I believe it.
Build it, make money, then build some more
Some old school smarts would help - and here's to Rob Toth for his help. Bloody good stuff, even the freebies!

Just looking at some of the tools here in Google Webmaster Tools. How important is it to add a sitemap to your site within Google Webmaster Tools? Does it help your ranking at all or does it just help Google index all of the subpages in your site?

    Thanks in advance.
