How Do You Build Your Lucrative Email Lists?

Hey Warriors, I know there are many ways to capture emails to an email list. But I was wondering if that is your SOLE purpose (list building), what way do you do it?

Do you simply make a one page squeeze page offering something free for them to join your newsletter with a little bio about yourself? Then drive traffic to it?

Or do you create more of a Wordpress minisite on the subject, with articles, optin forms, etc?

Just curious what has worked well for you.

Thanks!
Dayne

I was advised to start with the squeeze page and build your list from there, no distractions for prospect

That is what I'm thinking too, keep it simple. That way I can leave the relationship building, etc. in the emails I send out to them and also maybe a Facebook fanpage for more interaction.

I do not use just one squeeze page. I use squeeze pages that are specific to one product or niche. I have over 100 different squeeze pages building subscribers.

I send traffic via video marketing, SEO and PPC.

Every day the lists grow and I sell products/services to them.

    Dayne,

In order for your lists to be LUCRATIVE...you have to build lists of buyers.

You've been around for awhile, your high post count tells us you know a thing or two...

And this may or may not be of help.

But, it is a good idea to start with identifying the type of customer, and therefore the list you want to build.

If you don't know Dan Kennedy, google him, has some great info. I'm not associated in any way...just good stuff....

Dan gave a LIVE webinar the other day, I think it was FOUR hours...

One of the concepts I came away with is:

What are your back-ends? The Old School FUNNEL still works...you get them in with your FREE something...via the captcha page...splash or whatever...

build your relationship and attach a Life Time Value (LTV) to your customer.

This idea of seeing the end result, the LTV HELPS you to identify the type of customer, and the HOW to get them on your list.

Downside to blogs and all things WordPress things...is your time...IF you don't post regularly...with interesting content RELEVANT to what your LTV is...it can "eat your lunch".

There is a certain clean and neat aspect to the FREE report (or whatever) and used with an autoresponder...a tested and proven way to build a LUCRATIVE list...

IF...the report has value to your reader.

So, my vote...do a down and dirty, simple and quick...one page capture and build the list from there.

    gjabiz

PS. Lists don't need to be huge either. Consider this, a 4000 name list which buys 50 dollars worth of product per year, and stays active for a decade....the LTV is only 500 bux, but the cost of acquisition was a FREE report...

And no reason you couldn't have several such lists too.

Don't need tens of thousands on a list to make it lucrative...just a list of repeat buyers works well too.

You can try them all, squeeze pages, optin templates on the side bars of your blogs, email signatures, etc

dont just limit yourself to one use all you can to get them on your lists

Every time I've tested, in every niche in which I've tested, a content-rich site with a prominently incentivized opt-in on its landing page has worked best for me.

I've done a lot of split-testing of this. I always get more opt-ins from squeeze pages, and make less long-term money from the resulting lists. Different people opt in to squeeze pages. At least, enough are different people for it to affect the bottom line significantly. I don't use squeeze pages any more. As a result of that decision, I build smaller lists and make more money.

From you post count I thought you are an expert in all IM

The best way is to give real value to them for FREE. It is proven for myself too as when I found few IM there who gave real information for free, I loved them and signed up and still on their list. So it applies to all of us I think.

Give away something for free...and make sure the freebie is quality. If they receive your free gift and it's junk, that's what they will assume everything else you offer is.

I don't think I quite get this. For a content site, what would be the landing page? Would it be the home page?

Also, is this "prominently incentivized opt-in" a squeeze page?

Yeah, I'm not crazy about blogging. I would rather just create a nice looking squeeze page, give them something great and go from there. Like I said, I will keep the relationship building via the emails I send out and also on something like a FB Fanpage.

And yes, this will be in a very specific niche in the "self improvement" field.

I have indeed been around IM for a while now, and do it full time. But I've never really focused on "list building" (I know, I know). My focus has been on creating ebooks.

But I'm starting to realize I think it would be nice to build up a list instead and make my "funnel" work for me instead of just trying to sell a one-shot ebook.

Thanks for all the feedback so far!

EDIT: And thank you Alexa, as always, great stuff.

It's not necessary to "blog" to have a content-based site. You just have to have great content.

Here's what I do that works well for me:

I have a "generic" niche-related freebie that I promote via a significant opt-in on my landing page and via smaller opt-ins on each content page. Within the freebie I promote the main offer. Once they get the freebie (on the "thank you" page along with a OTO), they're on the "main" list for the niche.

    Then...

When a subject area calls for it, I create a TARGETED freebie for that subject. Within this freebie, I also promote the main offer, speaking specifically to their need/pain/itch. Again, on their thank you page, they have a link to the download, along with an OTO, also targeted to their need/pain/itch. They still get added to the main list.

I could segment the list and do targeted emails to the segments, but haven't yet.

I have a great relationship with my list.

I'm sure it would be possible to build this relationship only through emails, however it's easier for me to grease the wheels a bit on my content site.

    hey dayne

the way i build my business/list is from my personal blog AND a seperate squeeze page

both of these platforms have there place and should be used

i use my personal blog to funnel traffic to my squeeze page because my blog acts as a pre selling tool so when people get on my list they would of usually read my about me page and found out more about me so i would then of created a lot more trust and credibility which will help with open rates

i always class my blog as my "business building vehicle" blogs are so powerful and as long as you build up a followship and post regular the traffic will soon build up along with your list

I use Seperate squeeze pages when i launch specific campaigns with paid traffic because doing things this way i am able to use all of my sales funnel strategies to make a good profit on the front end most of the time, building my buyers list and increasing the size of my prospects list at the same time

this is what i do and its a solid approach to build your list as you can use free traffic which will build over time and also the option of using paid traffic which will build your list super fast at the same time

hope this gives you a few ideas dayne

PS: with having a personal blog im mainly talking about the IM niche but it could still work in many other niches like weight loss etc

    paul :-)

  • Here are some list building tips for you:

    1) Opt-in page with wicked free offer
    2) Make sure you have a sales funnel in place (example OTO's)
    3) Enable affiliates to promote your offer and pay them a hefty commission (saves you from driving traffic)
    4) Do solo ads, and once your list is a decent size do ad swaps.

Okay Dylan. The most lucrative method to adopt is to build a paid customer list, which actually is the number one task for an Internet marketer. In order to build a paid customer list, you may well have to give something away.

One of the best ways to build a paid customer list is to offer a product that is relatively inexpensive... say one that will sell for $9.95 or even $19.95 to Joint Venture partners and allow them to keep all of the profits from the sale.

That's right. Give them 100% of the profit... the whole $9.95 or $19.95 that the product sells for.

For me personally, I think the days of building lists using "front end" freebies are over.

Of course, I also believe that this is also a function of the niche you are targeting.

I have found that everything works to a degree, but we're all looking to maximize our conversion rates, right?

I have found that results (from niche to niche) can be very, very different using the same technique and in some cases, completely reversed in terms of how lucrative they will ultimately be.

In 2012, I will be focusing exclusively on rooting out the "tire kickers" so to speak and will be offering a "post purchase" opt-in freebie for buyers who have proven that they are not afraid to invest.

We'll see how it goes. Test, test, test!

What I have found over many years of building lists in dozens of niches is to start with proven buyers. For example, my primary method is to sell inexpensive Clickbank products, and buyers are incentivized to opt-in with additional bonuses, updates, new product information, etc. With this rather counter-intuitive marketing approach, subsequent sales conversions are actually far higher than accepting tire kickers and free loaders. Some sales professionals call this method "pre-qualifying" prospects.

Buyers are then offered incrementally higher end relevant niche products such as Amazon in autoresponder series that may go on for several years. My lists are constantly being cleaned of non-buyers every 3-4 months depending upon the niche. In this "meat grinder" type of marketing, a high percentage of my lists are active, regular buyers. Having established a pattern of consistently offering quality products, these buyers are far more likely to trust your recommendations above the competition when considering high end or even the very expensive products.

Sounds great- but how do you know who has bought and who has not? Clickbank doesn't give us affiliates access to buyer's emails.

I assume you have buyers email you for their bonus, with their CB receipt # or something like that?

The days of offering a junk PLR ebook to create a RESPONSIVE list are numbered. Offering true, doable information as an upfront freebie will never die.

No doubt on the different approach in different niches .. I used to be only a list builder type marketer but have realized in the last few years not everything need a squeeze. Some people are wanting something NOW. Try to run them through the email gauntlet and someone else will close before you can even get a conformation.

Funneling your list is always profitable. I start with a freebie seeker type list most of the time but ... I would unsub from my own list after a couple of months of not going to a buyers list because .. at that point the member becomes a liability and I will hit them hard and often for another 60 days or so .. by that time if they have not bought something .. I simply delete them myself.

My best converting squeeze has consistently been two phased.

Phase one takes a problem and actually offers a viable fix without the need to opt in. At the end of the fix, authority has already been established. A line at the end simply stating something like "If you really want to ramp this up we take this same principle <insert read more link here> ... this link goes to a "This post is for members only but Membership is free"

The squeeze page is only half the battle. Why is no one talking about traffic?

If you want to sell, you need to sell to people who have money.

I recommend a campaign on a lucrative list, like these:

BusinessWorldList - safelist, Free Safelist, Pro, Submitter, Marketing, Email
Mailing List - Email, Business, Sales Leads, Consumer - InfoUSA

I have a non-English blog with high traffic, so I just slapped the optin form and some freebie. For my niche sites (English), I did forum, video marketing, SEO, and guest blogging. Basically, I searched blogs in my niche with high traffic that accepts guest blogger. My biggest traffic come from guest blogging and forum.

Wow, I used to think to try the Paid to Click sites.....but one guru marketer then told it won't work because the browsers can open more than one windows and waiting until the timer stops. So I back off. Now at least I know from you it works. Thank you!

P.S. the only thing I'm concerned about building list with traffic from PTC sites are quality.

Are they freebie seekers? Newbie in MMO world? Interested in get rich quick scheme rather than serious marketing? what niche are they particularly interested in (i.e. gaming)? (because any serious marketer won't go around in PTC sites where they're paid for peanuts with long time to work and reaching the cashout. I knew myself because when I was the greenest newbie, I played around in PTC and quickly realized it never worths my time. Clicking ads for hours just to get $5 - $15 in the end of the month? Whoa).

This is on point for me. I'm doing my taxes and realized I spent 4k last year on internet products, wso's, software, you name it. I'd say 95 percent of it was seo related. I made very little money.

I just finished a list building course and I think this is the direction I should go in. No worries about google, backlinks, panda whatever. I think the course was quite good and I now have a firm understanding of the process.

Last year I built a squeeze page for a paleo diet product, put up a google ppc campaign and got about 156 opt ins. I thought that was pretty good. I delivered killer free content through follow up emails, but not one person bought the product. Oh they were really nice people, they would email me and thank me etc, but nobody bought. Their names were all foreign too, looked African. Google screwed me with traffic? I am now a bit gun
shy about buying traffic. The course I took said to buy solo ads. I'm a bit unclear about that process. Aren't those lists hit hard by everyone and everybody? If I buy 125 clicks for 50 bucks is that a good deal? I mean, best case scenario which I realize wouldn't happen is I would have 125 optins. How much is a subscriber worth? I guess it comes down to how good my squeeze page is. I was taught keep it very very simple with a great headline.

Thanks in advance for any feedback. I'm willing to give this a go, I understand it can be quite lucrative. I now have ability to throw up a squeeze page very quickly, I just need guidance on the traffic. Thanks again

    Hi,

I would do both a WP blog plus an opt in page and a squeeze page with a freebie.
and the main thing with a list is the relationship you will build with your list. If you have a blog it is easier to set up a newsletter every week or more, and you can send out the post most read on your blog that week, and combine with an offer.

    Hope that help

Nobody cares about you. Tell them what they're going to get out of being on your list. That's what matters to them.

And all the other stuff you talk about in your post is just specific ways of driving traffic. It's still making a squeeze page that gives them something they want and promises them something else they want, then driving traffic to it.

I'm not great at this at the moment but I'm building my list with JV Giveaway events.
It seems to be working - get them on the list from the giveaway (are they all tire-kickers?)

then start build the relationship- in the first 3 emails I send links to 3 good quality videos then in the 4th I offer a low value product and many buy!

Then it progresses from there with more "value" and more "offers". One day I'll hit them with a big value offer!

The most basic way of building your list is creating a squeeze page with a free offer
and autoresponder opt-in form on it. When that is put in place you just drive traffic
    to your squeeze page.

After that, there are many little things of importance that have effect on your list
building campaign, especially the design of your squeeze page, split testing, tracking
your results and tweaking along the line.

Well Dayne, what I think would work well for both experts as well as newbies would have to be trafficswarm.com's PRO account option and listbonus.com's platinum membership.

Honestly all you would need to do is to create a compelling squeeze page (an about page isn't necessary but will help) and send advertisements of your squeeze page right on out to those hungry subscribers. Then you would build a relationship with this list for about three months before you send your first affiliate advertisement out to them.

Truthfully, the longer you build a relationship with your list by offering your list free information and free resources the better. Your conversion rates will blow you away! Trust me when I say this. I hope this helps

I think Brian Tracy has a very good approach. Every email has good content (not much though) and every email had something that he is trying to sell (and is related to the content). I don't recall ever receiving an email from him that didn't contain content and I also don't recall ever receiving an email from him that didn't contain an attempt to sell me something.

I gotta be careful here. I don't want this to sound like my ad, therefore I am "submitting" that the subject of list building has really been stressed out by the fact that we now need 2,000 to 6,000 eysballs exposed to our advertising EACH DAY! To start from scratch to have an email list of any real value (1,000 or more) is really a huge undertaking and slow, usually. We must remember that we are in a numbers game and the numbers are getting bigger all the time.

I would set up two websites: a blog and a squeeze page. Your squeeze page will focus solely on building your list. As Alexa said, squeeze pages have higher opt-ins that content based sites. However, you will also set up a blog in your niche that not only provides great content and builds your credibility, but also links to your squeeze page in a post dedicated to promoting and talking about the product you are giving away in your squeeze page. Your main source of traffic to your squeeze page should be through your blog (and through your list if you already have a list).

This way, you can have both the higher opt-in rate of the squeeze page and the long-term reliability of your list from your content-based site.

Definitely agree with Carl here. Your blog and squeeze page can work well hand in hand.

You could also consider building a list off a facebook page. You can either put an opt-in box or use a Connect App. You do need to pick your niches carefully, as not all niches work well on facebook.

1.) Create a facebook page on your niche topic (e.g. "I Love Golf" or "I'm A Bodybuilder")
2.) Create a custom tab for your facebook page. (Here's instructions on how to do that)
3.) Put your opt-in box or ConnectApp on the custom tab and give away something for free.
4.) Drive people to your facebook fan page using facebook ads (Really cheap if you know what you're doing, have got 1200 likes for $20)
5.) Watch your list build itself! =)

One simple example is like this: Vegan Facebook page

  • List Building is very important part of Email Marketing. It requires a lot of initial analysis to create an extensive one & thereafter the final targeted audience. Following are some methods from where you can build an email list:

    • Focus on markets where people look for services/buy stuff
    • Use Your Social Network
    • Prosper with Partnerships

For a successful campaign not only email list is important, you have to provide value too to your readers.

Do you simply make a one page squeeze page offering something free for them to join your newsletter with a little bio about yourself? Then drive traffic to it?

Or do you create more of a Wordpress minisite on the subject, with articles, optin forms, etc?

Just curious what has worked well for you.

    Thanks!

Targeted Traffic to a Squeeze Page that has a real valuable free gift. You'll build a list fast this way (depending on how much traffic you can generate)

Always good to back it up with a blog of some sort where you can post more content and hopefully build a relationship with your subscribers. The stronger that relationship becomes the easy it will be to monetize them.
