    otherwise just link all your pages together well and that works

    Yes, its better that instead of having a sitemap page on the site itself you create an xml sitemap (the service is available free-search for create sitemaps.xml on Google). Then upload this sitemap.xml file to the root directory of your site. It will definitely give your rankings a boost.

    Well - as you can see, the debate is still out as to how much a site map can help you. But the one thing's for sure - it doesn't hurt!

    Make sure you maximize the effect of your sitemap by advertising it on your Google Webmaster Tools account.

    If you have a Wordpress blog, there's an XML sitemap plugin that's a cinch to use. Otherwise, the best tool that I've seen out there is here:
    Create your Google Sitemap Online - XML Sitemaps Generator

    It's a free service and auto-creates the sitemap for you - then (as above) all you have to do is upload it to the root directory of your site (www.domain.com/sitemap.xml)

    As I said, above it doesn't hurt, and in my view - anything that makes Google's life easier, most certainly can't hurt your chances of getting a higher rank on the search engine.
