Page Rank - Does it really.....

Does it really matter? Everyone is so fixated on it. I see guys all the time with PR2-3 sites doing very well.

Page Rank is probably one of the most important aspects to a website, not only for general traffic and business, but PR plays a major role in sales of domains and websites.

Higher PR means you rank higher in Google, and ranking higher means better exposure.

      Hi,

This is not necessarily true, and in most cases not true...

Like what was said after this, I also see no difference in the
correlation between PR and first page rankings etc.

Nevermind PR and just do what you do!

I think people get too caught up in all the PR concerns. I have had PR1 sites and PR0 sites ranking in first place on page one of Google for competitive keywords.

It depends on what you want from the site. If you are looking to sell links then PR is what everyone looks at (link juice).

Where a site is ranked in google is far more important than pagerank IMHO. I see lower PR sites in the number one search position all the time.

Install SEOFirefox and check out search results. You will find PR 0 sites above PR 4 or 5 sites and vice versa. The mix of PRs in any search listing gives the lie to those who persist in stating that higher PR means higher positions.

Part of the confusion is that you are always viewing what Google wishes, or is able to show. The PR values you see are not up to date.

I have a site that's been PR 2 for years. It is above many higher PR sites and below a PR 0!

Just get good links and keep updating with fresh content.

I have to agree with rmholla on that one. Page Rank has very little to do with Search engine rankings...in fact, by the time you see you PR, it is already outdated.

I think pagerank has more to do with the level of conversations on the net in regards to your site. That is why building PR is not hard....all you have to do is comment on do follow blogs, submit your site to page directories, ect. to accumulate it.

PR is important if you wish to sell advertising and backlinks on your website. The higher the PR, the more you can charge for placing backlinks on your site. Sales wise, it helps to get onto first page of Google but it's not necessary to be on page 1 of search results. For sales, targetted traffic is key. What good is it to have 1,000 random visitors over 1,000 targetted visitors?

I have to agree. Getting on the first page of Google is awesome for sales to the public. If your selling ads then focus on PR.

I agree with rmholla as far as link selling is concerned.

PR is also seems to be important to many website buyers. If there were 2 identical sites, same traffic, same revenue, etc. and one is PR1 and the other is PR4 which one do you think would sell for more money?

        All The Best,

    HI,

I focused on PR 'til I had a 5 for my blog. Then one day later I had a '2'. So I dropped the focus. Now I really don't care. As said above, it does matter IF you are monetizing with ads. Otherwise, I don't see the point.

What matters is the quality of your traffic for a given set of key words/phrases.

    IMHO,

But I don't know if just because toolbar pagerank is dated that I would ignore it. It still gives info on what the most powerful/linked to pages on your site are..even if it is old.

The reason I say that people that say pagerank is dead are idiots is because it shows their lack of understanding. Pagerank and link reputation are like two blades of a scissor. If you have one without the other, it doesn't work that well. That's why you can see a PR0 outrank a PR5. But trust me, if the link reputation profile was the same, the PR5 would KILL the PR0.
How to win friends and influence people!

Just because your opinion differs, does not make other people idiots. The fact is, this is all conjecture. Google knows the FACTS and they're not going to tell everybody.

Obviously link reputation and PR are related, but the nature of that relationship is not known. Page rank on it's own is, as you say dated and therefore tells us nothing concrete. It shows what the rank was the last time Google updated it.

PR matters in some ways, but not so much in other ways.

For example, if you're flipping a site, you'd better bet that PR matters because it's a psychological thing.

It also seems to matter when it comes to link building. I've seen brand new sites go from nowhere to first page in Google because of inbound links from high PR sites.

But I think people get too caught up in PR that they try to game Google instead of just providing solid, valuable content.

At the end of the day, if you're focused on providing a great experience with valuable resources, then you'll naturally get the inbound links, social media attention and search positioning.

    That's my take at least,

    Ronnie

I don't think pr matters anymore these days. The important thing is to provide good content for your audience and traffic will come your way through word-of-mouth.

If you can get to the first page of a search for what ever you are doing, that is all I worry about. But it isn't what will make or break you. I would not focus to heavily on it. You need to do other things as well.

If you can build your reputation, I find that even better. That way if you do get traffic to wherever, the traffic will buy/join. If you have no name, then it is going to be harder to get the sell or referral.

That is my view. Don't get to caught up in just one aspect.
