Question about using Alibaba for buying products

I have been exploring using Alibaba to make start another business, but I need to know if special licenses/permits are needed to get items for overseas. I was thinking about buying lots of laptops, 10/20 at a time. Does anyone know about going the Alibaba route?

My buddy contacted Alibaba for a "metal token" manufacturer for products and it went smooth. He had no permits or licenses to do this, they did not require any sort of tax ID info. They have pretty dang large minimum orders though.

The issue he was uncomfortable with is that he had to wire the money over...very hard to collect that back if he was scammed. But he was not scammed.

Computers may be a bit more complex then a metal game token though!

You might want to ask Customs if there is any special requirements to bringing in computers.

There are import restrictions on certain types of goods where you'd need special licensing, but not on consumer electronics. But bear in mind that certain CE products can only be resold in the USA when you have a resellers agreement with the licensee. So for example, you can buy iPods cheap from China, but Apple don't want you to sell them in the USA unless you're an approved Apple dealer.
The best way to start out is to find yourself an import broker. They'll do all the paperwork for you, help with organizing shipping and customs clearance etc. They'll also help with any special permits and licensing, though that shouldn't apply to you.
One you've done your first import through a broker you should have enough info to go it alone next time.

      Exactly this. Good advice.

The customs department of each country has different restrictions on what items you can import, how many, etc. Here in Peru, we can not import certain liquids or chemicals. My S.O. tried to buy some hair treatment product called Keratin (a liquid) from China and the customs department here in Lima intercepted it and would not allow us to have it, unless we payed a hefty fee which was more than the product itself was worth.

I always check with a broker for special goods (instruments, supplements, cars) just to be sure they're in line with current legislation.
