I am a complete newbie in internet marketing and websites. I decided to take my first step and learn how to install a wordpress theme. I have placed the files via a FTP (Wordpress 3.3.1 and my theme) but when I go to mywebsite.com/wp-login.php I get a 404 Not found? Does anyone know the reason?

You uploaded the wordpress files zipped or unzipped?
you'll need to upload the un-zipped files and create a DB for it, then run the install.php script.

and you have to place your theme in the /wp-content/themes/ directory, not just anywhere.

If you follow the instructions carefully, you shouldn't have any problems.

flash911- they said they FTP into server and uploaded, not trying to install via cpannel.

Although if you have cpannel you might want to just install through there because you don't sound like you know what you are doing, no offense, cpanel will just be easier for you, auto create the db and everything.

Also you can find someone on fiverr to install for you if your having trouble.

    Best of luck,
    Rich

Great idea, if your going to be contacting them anyway, you might as well ask them to install for you.

This isn't hard and you'll feel brilliant when you get it. Rather than try to walk you through just head over to Youtube and search for videos on how to install WP through your C-panel. In many you just go to the bottom of the C-panel menue and click on Fantastico. From there it's simple. It only takes two or three clicks.

And once you have that done it only takes another click or two to install any theme you want right from the dashboard in your site.

Turns out my account was flagged for verification(Im using HostGator), and they need me to send me a Photo ID for them to verify my account an allow me to continue using it, which is completely inconvenient. I'm just going to get a refund and find a cheaper host. Any suggestions apart from HostGator?

Don't you have an ID you can scan and send to them? This helps prevent fraud and is usually because of information mismatch... card/address etc. I don't think it's worth switching hosts...

If you still wish to, have a look in my signature - I'll install Wordpress for you.

HostGator is a very reputable company. You won't have any problems with what they requested. Many people get those requests, maybe have your parent contact them?

Unfortunately that's the way the business world works, at some time you will have to provide I.D. whether you like it or not.

Let me know if you're still looking for a host. Our prices are comparable to Host Gator and our service is superior. We can get WordPress installed for you with your theme.

          Best,

This might be the reason why they need more information, possibly your info and the info on the credit card you used don't match?
It's inconvenient for you right now, but as a business, this is what they're supposed to do, to prevent fraud etc. Probably another reliable hosting company will do the exact same thing.

I totally understand that it's not their fault. I just find it inconvenient how we are only given two choices a)call b) send them photo ID
Both of which I cannot do.

Oh well, I've gotten help from a fellow warrior. He offered me free web hosting (seeing as though i'm only using the hosting for testing, which isnt much)

Hostgator is an extremely reputable company and have 99.9% uptime like everyone else said... you wont be disappointed.

installing Wordpress is very simple With Cpanel like travlinguy said, just use Fantastico... it is literally a 2 click process and takes less than 5 minutes and your done!

then all you need to do is install a theme, but you have to have worpress installed 1st.

    hello,

Go on Youtube and check all the videos That would explain how to set up a WP blog in hostgator. Pause the video if you want. and just take your time it is really easy.

For Hostgator everybody need to verify his account before using it . usually is a phone number and you need to call if you live in USA. I don't know any further for other countries.

    Hope that help
