What spreadsheet software do you use? (POLL)

I've been a long-time Microsoft Office - Excel user. Swear by it. Ever since it came out. Heck, I go back to the Apple II Visicalc days before that.

I'm wondering what software you use? I don't care if it's MAC or PC-based, just what software you use.

      I use Excel for all my spreadsheet needs. It's the best out there in my opinion.

    I'm a tremendous Microsoft fanboy. Worked there as a contractor for five years. On some level, Microsoft is still "us" to me.

    Oh, and Macs are gay.

      Hi,

      Been using Lotus 123 since it's debut in early 80's.

      Replaced it with MS Excel in early 90's.

      Adopted Open Office Calc in the year 1999 and never touched MS Excel since then.

        OK, didn't want to inflame the MAC/PC fight. Although my PC isn't "pretty", it tows my boat, cuts my grass, plays linebacker, eats steak, and kicks your dad's butt

        So, it's starting to look like Excel is very popular, as I expected. Keep the votes coming!

          Speaking of which, when can I go out on your boat again and eat some steak?

          Oh... and MS Excel here.

        Always Excel for basic spreadsheet stuff. I tend to use it for just imputing notes and organizing myself too.

        For any heavy stats though, I tend to use MedCalc and SPSS.

    It's got to be excel (for now).

    Numbers is good, but, cross compatibility is a bit of an issue - which is why I choose not to use that.

    Yes !

    6 votes for Open Office.

    Open Office Calc advantages :

    -> functions exactly as Excel
    -> free from licensing madness
    -> supported by thousands of developers
    -> Java-based ( cross-platform )
    -> Open Document format : Calc data can be shared by other apps via XML
    -> can retrieve data from most SQL databases
    -> can save file in multiple formats
    -> can open multiple file formats
    -> can export to PDF
    -> fast, light & user-friendly
    -> safe & secure from virus, malware & worms unlike MS Excel files

      Open Office doesn't seem to be nearly as supported as it used to be since several key developers left it and started Libre Office. I switched over from Open Office to Libre Office a few months ago and it is much faster and updated much more often. Plus, it has as any (if not more) features than Open Office since it was started off the the same core code.

        Hi John,

        Thank you for highlighting.

        OpenOffice development has transited from Oracle sponsorship to the mega huge open source group - Apache. So I'm not worried about the development and the speed in getting newer versions or features.

        I gather LibreOffice's development team is much smaller and currently hoping for user donations to stay alive. So I won't be switching to them until they get a stable sponsor.

          I believe Open Office launched a fundraising campaign in October because they were about to shut down (just 4 months after Apache took over)

          http://world.einnews.com/pr_news/611...ming-shut-down

          Plus, Open Office lost most of its developers when Apache switched to their own license (ASL), shifting away from LGNU and MPL. Another drawback of the change is that Open Office now cannot integrate any Libre Office code because the licenses aren't really compatible. This means Open Office has a lot of catching up to do, while Libre Office can cherry-pick any quality new coding that comes out with the next Open Office release.

          Open Office is supposed to release a new version in the first quarter of this year.

            Hi John,

            Thanks for the news link.

            Just downloaded OpenOffice with SVG graphic support.

            We'll see how it goes.

    For a while I tried to convince myself that Openoffice Calc was every bit as good as Microsoft Excel. I have since then escaped from that delusion, realizing that there is no better spreadsheet program than Excel.
